For about the last year and a half I have been trying to educate myself in the mysteries of knife grinding. I think :o I have finally learned the right touch on a 4X36 sander, and have developed an intimate relationship with a handful of files. My first sharpened pointy thingy idea involves a stock removal dream with some .250 machined O-1 that should  have a finished blade length of about 14". Is there anyone near Mid Michigan that would like to show off their knifemaking skills to someone who is trying to learn?

I'm no help as I'm dong it all by trial and error! Of course it sucks to forge out big heavy chucks of W2 just to screw it up because I can't grind uniformly, symetricaly. What the hell, at least I am making something that kinda looks like a knife (I can't make handles to save my life) and I get to play with fire and beat on hot steel with big hammers!!!

and yes I have a 4X36 belt sander also. I needed something and it was all that anybody localy had prior to that I was using only cheap hand files (that was a lot of work, and I still wasn't getting uniformity).

Give me a call, I'm in Warren (north of Detroit)

I'd be more than happy to help with what I can. I'm no "pro" but I can make a pretty good knife.

Nick:)

I'm no pro either, but I've got a Coote and can usually make it do what I want.

If you can make it down to Spring Arbor sometime I'd love to show ya!

Thanks for the invites. Things have been pretty hectic on my side as of late, you probably don't know what that is like huh?, but when I am able to plan my life more than a few hours ahead I will be in touch.

im not sure if i ever tried this or just kept thinking about doing it trying to mentally develop ways to work better. but on my 4x36 i can take the belt from flat to vertical and if you set it at the bevel angel you want it SHOULD be easier to keep the angle consistent.

but come on its so much more fun to screw up blanks and tear through belts, just be the moses of knife making</sarcasm>

My folks have a cabin about an hour south of the bridge that we sometimes visit. Maybe have an excuse to get north for a couple days?;):D
