Seems like spyderhole is much stronger part than the lock.

one guy at russian forum was having bad luck thinking that his manix is the strongest of knives he has. so he was hitting packages from refrigerator, with spine of the blade - NO, to smash the contents or make holes in the packages was not the point (the point was just to separate some packages with mushrooms from packages with meat, so hits were very weak). the result:

well... at least, the spyderhole coped well.
the guy can't say nothing except of various russian analogs of the F word now.
no profit to send the knife to spyderco as it is very old, right? supposingly, they have no such an old parts anymore and wouldn't machine a new part... he wouldn't change it for one of a new ones as his is rare one today. if anybody have parts of old manix, please let them know in this topic.
initial thread of that manix user http://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/64/1493587.html
i asked him and was allowed to create the thread here.

Send it to a custom maker and fit a new lock if the owner does not want to send it back to Spyderco.

Really? Whacking frozen food with the back of a folder??? Well, was there really not any item at hand better suited for that purpose in a kitchen? A sharpening steel, rolling pin or a frying pan or whatever. May I recommend the back of a meatcleaver instead. I'm stunned of the degree of stupidity displayed sometims when it comes to knife(ab)use. Exactly what do people think knives are made for. They are cutting tools for gods sake.

it is like my socom delta insert broke when i just OPENED it! NO whacking, just opening and it broke, do you copy?

one more thing, how do you know it was kitchen, isn't it possible he was practicing outdoor activities? portable freezer and shit, you know.

Do you always "scream" at forums? Weak? And how do you know? Were you there? Obviously he managed to break a knife in doing so. Enough said.

i was there where my socom delta insert broke while i was JUST SIMPLY opening it. it is enough for me to understand, that when the guy's knife breaks with weakiest hits, he says the truth. there is too many accidents of knives tearing apart.

NEWS FLASH: This just in. Folding knives are meant for cutting. The locking mechanisms are made to prevent accidental closure during normal use. Any locking mechanism can fail if subjected to abuse or stress that exceeds the lock's capacity.

Now, to the matter at hand. Why on Earth would anyone use the back of a folding knife to whack at frozen packages pulled from a refrigerator? Why would you use the back of a folding knife to whack at anything? As to the failure of that particular Spyderco. How do we know whether or not the knife had been whacked about before? Whacked about enough to cause a crack in that part of the lockbar? Folding knives aren't meant for hammering, friend.

My point is simple. Common sense. Use the right tool for the right job. Use a knife for cutting. Need to separate frozen packages? Use a mallet. Don't have a mallet? Improvise with something rigid, anything except a folding knife.

If you contact Spyderco, maybe there is a slim chance that they would send/sell you a new lock bar. Worth a try at this point, I don't see what else you can do except go the custom maker route as marthinus suggested. Good luck.

What happened with your socom has nothing to do with what happened with the spyderco. The OLD spyderco that was being abused by exposing it to forces it wasnt supposed to be exposed to. If two materials are frozen together those items are not only hard but many times impossible to separate. Tapping lightly isnt going to separate them but even when doing something like that (very stupid) with the spine of the blade you put the lock under stress of shock. His "weak" movement is translated into a harder impact on the lock and in a quick sharp blow which will sheer that piece of metal. Its a case of using a knife for something that it wasnt intended and suffering the consequences. Plus, it and older knife and if he is spine whacking frozen items I wonder what other stresses that lock has seen in its lifetime. You cant blame poor workmanship when a knife is that old and obviously abused. As to your socom? It has absolutely nothing to do with the spyderco.

Call me crazy, but I prefer to use the pommel of a closed folder for anything that resembles striking.
