When I first read the title I was thinking what length I needed.....before the page actually opened

You then made it easy stopping at 8" long in the poll
I definitely want More than.

Well we are talking about knives, not machetes. Greater than 8” starts to get into machete territory.
 
7-8 inch blade for me. 3 1/6 to 1/4” thickness and clip or drop point. Done everything survival related you can possibly do with blades with the criteria I mentioned.
 
Most guys look at 5 or 6 inches, and swear it's at least 12 inches...
but if you were judging by the hand in the picture: I have been accused of packing along some bear paws...
