Well we are talking about knives, not machetes. Greater than 8” starts to get into machete territory.

7-8 inch blade for me. 3 1/6 to 1/4” thickness and clip or drop point. Done everything survival related you can possibly do with blades with the criteria I mentioned.

If I only have one sharp item, I grabbed the wrong go bag, but I hope it has an 11“ smatchet in it.

but if you were judging by the hand in the picture: I have been accused of packing along some bear paws...

Bigger isn’t always better. But I guess we can put you in the 8”+ category. I’m happy with my GNS.

Perhaps nothing. Or perhaps build a shelter in half the time, conserving valuable calories.

I will err on the side of having a knife that is too big vs. having a knife that is too small any day, when presented with a true survival situation.
