I am looking for a knife that locks closed, so that I can carry while running in urban areas or mountain biking.

I had been carrying an emerson comrade. Awesome knife, but does seem to open up slightly if subjected to lots of movement.

The knife does not necessarily need to "lock", but it would be nice if you had to hit a release to open it, etc. I'm not sure if the Benchmade Axis locks would fall into this category.

I would also like it to be pretty lightweight and have a blade over 3".

Thanks

Sure do, try looking at SOG specialty knives. Here is a link to their folders.

Look at the Flash II series, and their SOG Trident folder series. Tell us what you think of them, they both lock closed by your choice, and they are assisted openers too. Don't worry about the AUS 8 they use, it's very good and their blade angles hold a a great edge.

Hope this helps, J.

Axis lock knives lock themselves shut. Check out the BM615, it very much wants to stay shut. Boyle dent spydercos also bias towards close very strongly. You could get a waved spyderco something or other for fast deploy without it opening accidentally. Pikal perhaps?

Look at spyderco's waved endura for something over 3". It's just like the emerson wave, but with the lockback design, you don't have to worry about it opening in your pocket. Good suggestion diversionmary . I forgot all about that.

i had a kershaw leek that locked closed. i dont know if other kershaw models have this same feature.

I'm guessing by your name that you live in NYC. So, I don't thing that an Auto would work for you. But the BM autos have a lock on them.

I recommend considering knives that either carry tip-down or have a strong bias towards staying closed. Spyderco lockbacks have the strongest bias towards staying closed until they're about 1/3 open, I only have one ball-lock model so I am not as familiar with it but they tend to stay closed as well. You should be OK with the P'kal, especially since the blade is ground thin and will not gain much inertia.

As far as I know all Emersons are some type of liner or integral lock, which do not have a very strong bias to stay closed, so that is probably your problem. Jogging is probably enough to release the ball detent.

Don't want to burst anyone's bubble but according to NYC knife laws the only thing that's about completely legal are slipjoint knives. Anything that can be flicked open by thumb or wrist action is considered a gravity knife and is illeagal in NYC. You'd get in just as much trouble getting caught carrying one of these as you would an auto. Just letting you know. There are a bunch of threads out there right now pertaining to this topic.

you could try a kershaw E.T. it has a wheel lock that locks the blade from opening. i have one and like it alot!:)

I second the SOG Flash II. Very light. The thinner profile of a Spyderco Endura, Delica, or Native may also be appealing to you for comfort's sake, though.

french opinel locks closed :D
and you can get any size you want, carbon or 12c27 steel
very cheap, you loose it, you buy another one

gama,
I lived in nyc for twenty years ran two NYC marathons and ran all over that island. what I used to do is carry my keys with a modified old large key protruding between my middle fingers attached to a small ring of house keys that are in my fist. this makes a legal serious weapon that is AT THE READY and won't interfere with your running. has the same effect as knuckles or a small trench knife, believe me it works -guymalley.com

I agree. If you're going to carry a folder for self defense, carrying one that locks closed is a bad idea as it will, in all likelihood, slow down deployment significantly.

Tony is right about NYC knife laws.Anything they can flick open will be called a gravity knife.I had a Spyderco Endura taken away while I was visiting a friend in the Soundview section of the Bronx.
A knife that locks open & closed is a Paul knife.LoneWolf is now making them with 3 1/4" blade.I have another knife made by GT that also uses a button lock, works different than the Paul but still locks open & closed.I do'nt know if GT is still in buisness, the knife is well over 10 yrs. old.

A question for you new yorkers is:

When your knife is confiscated, do you get it back?

I would hope so since it's like the NYPD stealing from you :grumpy:.

If your knife is confiscated from you, you will receive a summons at the very least. And will have to appear before the court if you want a hearing. If you choose not to, then you pay the summons. This is if you are very lucky. Otherwise you would be arrested and be at the mercy of the city system. The answer is NO, you will never see your knife again.
