Self defence knife - which one?

It never fails to anger me when i hear of all the restrictions that an honest law abiding citizen must go through just to be able to walk safely on the streets and be able to defend himself if the need arises.
Will we ever see the day when we start executing all the scum that go and take lives on a whim ? Will we ever see the day when a criminal thinks that if he pulls that trigger or uses that knife or rapes a woman that he will be put to death himself and not in 10 or 20 years but immeadiately after trial without 500 appeals ??
Personally i would like to see 500 executions a day till the jails are empty of these cold blooded filthy scumbags, then we might see how quick they are to play wanna be tough guy.
I doubt we will ever see that day but its nice to think about. China sets a good example, take em out and blow their brains out publicly and thats that.

Im sorry to take the thread off course but im just letting off steam and im sick to death of seing people victimized because of gutless judges , politicians and putrid filthy low life scummy lawyers.
If anyone knew my background they would be pretty shocked to hear this coming from me, but as you get older you see things differently i guess.

Great post. I agree.

the spyderco is NOT designed in any way as a self defence knife. The best place for law related talk is britishblades where we have a policeman (Ross) and a lawyer (Danzo) to help us out
As a trained martial artist including armed combat I doubt carrying even an illigal knife would do you much good anyway. I've been a victim of armed assualt and even if I wanted to I wouldn't have had time to get a knife out (knife was left at home so I don't have it on me at times like that.
A walking stick on the other hand is already out and much easier to stop someone without killing them

to give you an idea of what I've been threatend with/assualted with
*rock
*chain (gang fight outside school!!)
*knife (again in school though not the same one)

the other one I've known happen is anti freeze which acts rather like mace

Running is all well and good, except when your in an elevator, car, bus, subway and so on.Or perhaps your, wife, kids, parents are with you.Or a hundred other things.

There is no one answer.

I feel very sorry for you Brits--you who fought off the mighty Nazi hordes now cant even carry a Leatherman tool!!!
You need to get proactive and change some very very bad laws!!!

Brits have less gun/knife crime through right? At least I thought I heard that somewhere...

I carry an Advanced Taser legally here and have complete confidence that it will drop just about anybody like a cord of wood.

For the fun of it, you should visit Taser Interntional and view some of the actual use videos there.

In case you ever get some sensible laws, the Advanced M-series or X-series Tasers will put a lot of kickass on your belt or under your armpit.

Forgive this Yanks ignorance, but what did the bobbies carry? Maximus Otter, did you carry a nightstick? Any type of knife? Did you carry a gun?

From the few Cockney movies I've seen, it appears London is a pretty bad town, and the gangsters aren't following the rules. I realize that Guy Ritchie movies do not equal the evening news, but how bad is the situation over there?

I guess they're illegal here in NY and a couple other states, so it's just not the Brits that need some sensible laws.

Howard Stern's morning parrot show plays some of those incidents, one is of a guy being tasered, one of they only funny things going on on that show. Every time Beetlejuice comes on is always good for a hearty laugh.

So, in Britannia, a Sikh can carry a knife in public as part of his religious costume, but native Britons are restricted to carrying only small non-locking folders.

Well that's logical...

I think I'm gonna get a Kershaw Scallion (smooth blade) for home utility use with a Gerber pocket sharpener and a Maglite 3 D cell. How does that sound?

Also, I'd like to eventually start a little collection of knives. One knife I really like the look of is the Heckler and Kosch P200. Does anyone knoe if it is any good? It looks absolutely gorgeous but I've never heard H&K knives spoken about, good or bad...

Btw:

British police carry a variety of weapons, varying from county to county. Most British police carry a baton and CS spray and wear stab vests.
Then you have ARUs (Armed Respons Units) which are basicly coppers in cars with guns (although they re trained to SWAT standards). They carry a handgun, usually a Glock 17 or a SIG Sauer P226 and an H&K MP5 A5 carbine (an MP5 with semi-auto and safe only). Police at airports are the same but they have full stock A4s. MP5s usually have optical sights and flashlight grips. They wear a vest of somekind, not sure if it is full body armour or just a stab vest.
Then you have SFUs (Special Firearms Units) which are kinda like the Brit equivilant of a SWAT team. They have fully automatic MP5 A5s and a handgun, body armour and probably a tac knife of some kind. They sometimes wear fatigues, kevlar helmet etc. Finally, you have a unit called something like the 'rifle brigade', I forget exactly, who have rifles and sniper rifles. This varys from county to county a lot and I'm not 100% sure of the accuracy of that, but you get the ideas.
And then there's the SAS and so on, but they're military, and some special police units like the Flying Squad carry guns I believe.

No sticks or clubs, unless you medically need one.

Read that link, Jack Straw. It gives VERY, VERY good advice. Take some martial arts, there are some excellent dojos in the UK. Carry a flashlight.

Don't even think about a knife for self defense, you will wind up in goal for sure.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Large D-cell flashlight is great to have in the car. One of those big Maglites is just as good as a baton. Tactical light is good, and a sturdy umbrella is absolutely great.

Yep I keep a 3 D-cell in my truck, got that little tip from my dad who was a cop. I talked to somebody at Maglite and they're going to have an LED version out sometime this year, can't wait.

Although no cases have come to court yet, I believe that all the Kershaws you list would all be classified in the UK as autos ("Flick knives"). The legal definition is: "Any knife which has a blade that opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button , spring or other device in or attached to the handle."
Thats basically the same here in the USA, I got around it by buying a SOG flash II with the S.A.T. system.
Instead of pushing an object in or attached to the handle you push on the blades thumb-stud.
It works great every time.:)

I love it when companies make products that help us circumnavigate absurd laws...IT'S GREAT!!!:D:D:D;)

There used to be umbies on the market with stolid steel rods for the shaft -- just to survive the wind, of course.

Ok, a 3 D-cell won't fit in my pocket. Is a 2 D-cell worth it? Are either of these powerful enough to 'temporarily blind' someone?

Like I said, I wanted (and still want, but just for home use) a Kershaw Scallion which is assisted opening, not automatic opening, so it is legal to own in this country AFAIK but I couldn't carry it with me. Does anyone have any experience of the Kershaw Scallion? Is it easy to hold? Can it cut through soft wood ok? Is it easy to cut your fingers when opening/closing?

Any help much appreciated :)

jack if you want an EDC torch get in on the group buy of nuwai qIII of us brits

maglites make good bottons but they wont blind. You want a surefire for that, or even better the gladius thats coming out

Hmmm...well I'm on a budget and I was planning to get a Victorinox Jelly Classic for an EDC pen knife and mini torch. How much would one of these QIIIs be? Unless it's very cheap, I'll have to go with the Victorinox really.

I got reccomended the Surefire G2 which I assume can blind, but it's too small to use as a baton and it's made of polymer. Is it still of any significant use as a weapon?

QIII will be about £21 including postage

G2 torches are well built, not as good as a batton as a maglite though

I know the other forum wont let us discuss combat but you could always PM on it

For the first ~25 years of my service, all we carried was a 15" wooden truncheon. It was concealed in a special pocket down the outer seam of the right pants leg. My force then went over to the PR24. For some reason, during my last few years' service, we then changed again to the Monadnock Friction Lock baton (essentially an ASP).

We were not issued with knives, and very few officers carried one. I always carried a Victorinox Ranger SAK.

I never carried firearms. To carry, one has to apply for specialist training.
