Self-Defense Emerson

The combat kbit is awesome. nothing wrong with it that I experienced. It might not be as great for edc due to the blade shape, maybe a commander will be better.

Oh your looking for somthing for self defense carry yes a .38 snub nose revolver very good choice

i love my combat kerambit.

what types of problems have you read about?

i have found it to be fast, secure in the hand, easily concealable, and well built.

I resisted the Combat Karambit for a long time. I thought up all kind of excuses, like it wouldn't cut on the backstroke, etc. Then, I actually held one....and I immediately knew it was the ultimate defense weapon! I carry the Super everywhere except in LA, where I carry the regular one which is under 3" (so it is legal).

Go to the Emerson web site, and look at the demo videos. I have mine set up to wave out blade forward, on the strong side. I catch the ring with my index finger, and just go into boxing mode...this is so simple and absolutely natural. No way you are going to drop this, and no way anybody is going to ever disarm you....yet you still have some options for opening your hand if you need to.

I also have the Bullnose, but it isn't going to be anywhere near as devastating as the curved one.

:D Yay! The Super Combat Karambit's rock! I got model 0073 and it's my EDC knife.

I personally love the Combat Karambits more than most traditional blades mainly cause of the finger hole and blade design (I own a Super Combat Karambit) I practice Krav Maga with a group and we use the training/ non-edged combat karambits and trust me.. you can torque a guys arm/ wrist down to disarm him/ her but just a slight flick of your finger can spin that blade against the other persons arm and they will most likely let go in a second. It's seen as an unconventional weapon to carry due to the design and look of the blade but honestly I like it more cause of the fact that you can intimidate someone just by practicing some hand drills. (Showed some friends some hand drills once at a cafe while I was sitting and everyone was just awed at speed and technique.)I carry mine with the “wave” going forwards (It would have the left hand sided pocket clip instead of the factory right side) so I can grip the finger hole, pull the blade out with a single finger (Index finger), the blade will snap open edge forward instead of having the edge facing down to the ground or behind you, have my thumb and index finger securely around as to have it ready and be ready to fight or already have the tip up inside the under part of a persons Adam’s apple, so if you think about it in the time it takes you to draw your Emerson like a CQC-11 UTCOM or a CQC 14 Snubby I’ll of already hooked that blade into your throat, belly or groin if I was really wanting to do some major damage. As I found it’s also a good weapon to use as a blocking device/ leverage tool mainly cause you can have someone stab forward at you and with the reverse grip (Blade tip down) you can push their arm out of the way (kind of like a right hook aimed at the persons arm but using the blade to push away the arm), step forward with a good punch to the nose or a swift kick to the groin and then come back with a slash at the throat/ belly, so trust me… anyone who thinks karambits make bad self defence weapons are sort of narrow minded as the blades shape reflects thousands of years of nature. (Raptors, birds, cats and animals)
A downside would have to be sharpening the curved blades edge if you use it as a utility knife and you can't really stab with the combat karambit, but one nasty thing you will learn very fast is that you can make quite a small incision into the flesh, if you torque the blade forward/ hooking it will cause greater trauma under the skin which probly won't be as noticeable since the wound would be deep under the skin.
The Combat Karambit has a 2.7” inch blade while the Super Karambit has a 3.7” inch blade so if you are worried about the getting in trouble I would go with just the Combat Karambit, This is just a personal opinion and the CQC-14 Snubby is a great small profile knife with a full sized handle, for self defence I feel the karambit has a few advantages over normal knives but read up some information about defence with one and you will understand what I mean quickly.

I guess the majority of issues were with the linerlock, some people seem to think it is loose, while others think it is perfectly fine. I have no experience modifying knives, so if it were weak, I would probably have a helluva time adjusting it.

Emerson's liner locks are not weak. Poor quality and knife abuse cause a lock to fail. Maybe you should consider a FB. No failure there.

A fixed blade would definitely be the best choice in my opinion, but concealed (and even a good number of non-concealed) fixed blades are illegal in most California jurisdictions and folders have to be under 3" I believe, which, unfortunately, limits one severely; especially in Southern CA where the laws and sheeple are less friendly to cutlery--unless it's in your kitchen.

The EKI Combat Karambit is excellent. The only problem may be, if you have very large hands, the finger hole may be a little too small. If you have regular sized hands, it's the perfect knife though.

If you happen to have big hands, you can get the Super Karambit, with a larger hole.

So after seeing your guys' replies, I think I am going to get the Folding Combat Karambit. I might buy one of the others later on since it seems like I never can buy just one knife from a good manufacturer... Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on a good online dealer for the Emerson's.

The "Snubby" was developed for just the purpose you describe and a quick look by anybody will show the blade under 3" (and it has a full size handle). Take a closer look at it. The karambit is kind of specialized and will take some more getting used to than the traditional shape CQC-14 "snubby." Ditto on New Graham Knives service and I also like Knife Center (which is where I got my CQC-14).

Stuff like this isn't the least bit helpfull! Obviously, he said he lives in Calif where CCW's are hard to come by and he is asking about knives, so what's the point in a comment like this????

Even if one has a CCW (or even in you are a LEO for that matter!), you are going to be in a world of trouble if you ever have to shoot somebody. Your're going to end up in court no matter what, and the guy you shot (or his heirs) are going to sue your ass off....so all these "just shoot them" type comments are absolutely no help to anybody!

your gonna end up in court if you cut or stab someone as well, but i see your point.

useless post.

there was a rash of threads not so long ago regarding the strength of various liner locks, including emerson's. some said they had the locks fail after a spine whack test.

having never done this i gave it a try. NONE of my folders failed. figured i might be going a little easy, so i whacked my cqc 13 pretty hard on the edge of a desk a few times. still held up.

i can only surmise that with the emersons in particular, the pivot screw was loose, resulting in an incomplete engagement of the lock, and ultimate lock failure.

I agree you should go with the 14. the kerambits are sweet, i have a few of them, but you say EDC and use is your primary concern. The kerambits are not as usefull in a wide range of cutting chores as the 14 is. the full size handle on the 14 is much better than the mini7, which is basicaly your other choice besides kerambits. the other blade shaped kerambits are maybe worth a look, iv had the commander and the 7 but didnt like them much, the spear point would probably be the best if you really like the kerambit handle and want a good utility blade as well.

but you should really get them all, just to make sure ;)

the combat kerambit is absolutely not a utility blade. the cqc and bullnose would be better for utility purposes, but are still mainly for sd.

if utility is more important, a cqc 7 or snubby will work well. and with the wave you still have a damn fine sd blade.
