I am looking for A folder for self defense only. So far I am considering the large crkt kff, or the Spyderco harpy/merlin. The knife must be under $50.00. If you can reccomend one of the above, or another let me know. If you got one for sale, email me.

I would have to go with the Columbia River KFF. Hard to beat it for the money.

Any of the medium zytel spyderco's
Any of the AFCK line.
I like serrations-cut clothes well...

(I just bought one, NIB, here at "Knives
For Sale" for only $25, including Priority

If you were able to spend a little more money than $50, I'd suggest the Extra-Large Cold Steel Tanto Voyager or 5 inch Gunsite.
I have both of these, and they are EXCELLENT
"defensive/offensive" knives.

A vote for the large CRKT KFF.
I really like Spydercos but the KFF is hard to beat for the price.
By the way, a Spyderco Matriarch would only cost a little more...

Construction fit and finish is probably unchallenged in the CRKT's C/KFF price range.

However, for self-defense carry only, you might want a knife which deploys quickly. You might consider the growing number of folders which have an "assisted" opening like some of the Kershaw folders. You may have to pay a little more than $50 however.

If you have a thick skin and don't mind being "booed" by some people at these forums, you might consider some of the Colt folders which have a spring-assisted opening.

I believe they come shipped without the spring installed. Therefore by legal definition, it is not an automatic. You must install the spring in yourself.

Thanks for the replies so far. The blade must be 4" or less. Autos are legal here for collecting only not carry.(I want to be legal.) I have heard A lot of good about the KFF, but I have also heard they are very heavy. Are they too heavy to carry all the time? As we all know A great self defense folder won't help if you left it at home because it was too heavy.

"different" has an "unused" Cold Steel Large Tanto Voyager for sale at the "Knives For Sale/Trade" Forum here, for $40. You might want to check that one out, as it's a great lightweight "self-defense" folder, with a 4 inch blade.

I'd have to say the Spyderco personally I just can't get past the look of the KFF and I like the slimline of the clipits

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

RE: Knives with assisted openings.
Although you may want to check with your local bylaws, they are usually not considered automatics as they have a thumbstud and require the user to manually open the knife (until the torsion spring kicks in).

Although your preference is for a folder, 4" or less, a small skeletonized fixed blade may also be a consideration for self-defence carry.

There are a lot of skeletonized (i.e. one piece, flat, no scales) knives around.

The CRKT STIFF KISS can be had for under $20 and comes in many different blade variations.
The Kydex sheath isn't bad for a knife under $20 and can be mounted on a belt, inside jacket pocket, or boot-style in many ways.

If you really want to get fancy, you can even rig a shoulder holster for it.

If your buying a knife that might save your life then don't skimp on the quality. Get a SOCOM ELITE!! They are awsome!!!!

For a bit more the 50 bucks I would get a Spyderco Endura.

Full Tang, it ain't Kydex thats in the sheath for that Stiff KISS. That is black Zytel (R). Still pretty good stuff though, I had a Black-Ti coated Stiff KISS for a while, but sold it to Mr. Rosvall.

CRK&T Kasper. Hands down your best bet for all of the features you'll want at an affordable price. Consider yourself lucky, excellent tactical folders like this didn't come this cheap a few years ago. Get one. You won't regret it.

I'd say one of the Kershaw Ken Onion knives. I tried one in a kinfe shop, and the torsion assist is awsome! You just push it a little, and POP! it's open! I'll have the Whirlwind in about 24 hours!! You can get it for $60, tax and shipping included. The Blackout might be a better choice, for ten dollars more, though. I didn't get it becuase I am looking for a knife for general carry, and I think the paint might wear off.

Bteel, to answer your question about heft and carryability of the CRKT KFF...

Yes, the knife is pretty heavy to carry clipped to the pocket, but I've found that you can get used to the heft. However, it DOES take a little time to get used to carrying it around very often.

Still, once you take it out and hold it in your hand opened, you really appreciate its heftiness. It feels extremely solid and definitely increases your confidence in this knife as a weapon. Plus, I don't find its heftiness to affect its effectiveness and speed in doing slashing and thrusting motions. Rather, it feels just as solid as a hefty fixed bladed, 5" plus tactical knife would feel.

I definitely recommend in getting this knife as a tactical solution. However, as I said, it takes a little getting used to the heft. Oh, and watch out for the minor rust spots that appear due to the bead blast finish. Be sure to wipe the blade as soon as you receive it with a rust-prevention product.

Good luck!
