Self sharpening metal?

These are SMA [shape memory alloys ] and it is nothing more than a type of martensitic reaction. It certainly is bizarre the first time you see it. Google SMA and you'll see the applications and mechanism that operates .
The only "self sharpening" blade will be like the paring knife that I have somewhere. Soft stainless steel blade and one side of the blade is coated with carbide. As you use it the stainless wears away leaving the carbide though not very sharp. It would cut through anything though !!

Interesting read, seems the metal has died off in popularity. Cant seem to find the answer of if it will go back to its sharpened state.

I had a piece of nitinol wire some engineer gave me to play with when I was a mechanic back in the late 70s, neat stuff, I was always interested if there was a way to use it as a backspring to make automatic knives...

No it will not sharpen itself. if you roll the edge it should spring back, but most dulling comes from abrasive wear. If metal is removed then its not going to spring back. NiTinol however makes a great blade 100% corrosion proof, tough and hardenable to over 60 HRc. If you are interested look into SM-100 it is a proprietary NiTinol Alloy that you can actually buy.
