Sell me on Danner boots

I have a pair of Danner Radicals and have had them for several years. I have worn them during hurricanes and during snow storms and they have been fine shoes. I can't compare them to others but found them to be excellent value for the length of time I have owned them.

I've had Danners, Asolo, Vasque and Scarpa boots. The Danners are good in cooler weather but very very hot in the summer. The best I've worn for aggressive hiking and hunting are the Scarpa Sl. Great support, not too hot and look good if you wear them to town.

Personally I moved to 5.11 boots and for less then half it's a lighter boot that has a better sole. The leather isn't as nice, but the danner is nowhere near double the boot.

I wear 5.11 for work, but I hated their hiker...thing.

RE:OP-I bought a pair of Danners in 2008 for a hiking trip in the PNW and have worn them on every excursion since. I love them. They are durable and fit like a glove.

I wear 5.11 for work,
Same here, I do love em for work.

The danners are NICE, but didn't last as long as I expected. Msgnums suck a LOT. Don't like magnum boots at all.

I wanted Danners for a time, but I couldn't find a pair that fit.

I bought a pair of size 9 Ft Lewis and when I got them they were about 3 inches too long in the toe. I went to their warehouse, thinking that I got an odd pair and discovered that I had not, they're just sized weird. In order for me to wear Danners, they'd have to be size 5.5 EEEE, which they don't make.

I'm still baffled at how anyone can wear these. Many people I know absolutely love them. Their customer service is definitely top notch.

I'll second the Lowa recommendation. I have been wearing these for years - in a perfectly fitting size 9.

They are the best boots I have ever worn. Gone through several pairs. The leather will last forever. One thing to watch though. On some of their newer models they have replaced the metal hardware with plastic. Supposedly people were complaining about the metal due to metal detectors. Anyways the plastic hardware will break. I have removed several of the plastic eyelets on my current pair. Make sure the ones you get are metal.

Speaking of combat boots... Where do Matterhorn (looks almost identical to Danner's Ft. Lewis) rank as far as quality?

They are good boots not as durable as the Ft Lewis and generally not as comfortable for most people. Some people I served with prefer the Matterhorn Boot but as a rule they were in the minority.

The Matterhorn Boot would be a good alternative for someone that isn't going to wear them everyday or finds them to be more comfortable.

Boots like the 5.11 (or even the molded imported Danners) Tactical are more like tennis shoes than boots. If someone likes them and is happy with their performance then they are a great buy. Don't expect them to be anywhere near as durable as real boots sewn up by hand. They don't have near the quantity or quality of materials in them.

A good pair of Heavy Duty Danner handsewns will easily last 10 years of heavy use if properly taken care of. Most civilians probably don't have the time or incentive to properly take of their gear. I know I don't anymore because I don't feel the pain of neglecting my gear like I once did.

I have worn the Acadias for years. When I wear them at work they usually need resoled about once a year or two. I also like the GTX hikers and the linemen boots. I advise that you make sure to get the ones with the hooks for the last two eyelets if you get linemen or hikers. Some nitwit in the contracting part of my agency specified eyelets instead of letting well enough alone and its almost enough to make me go back to Acadias full-time.

Superior customer service. We have had some issues with the government contract GTX hikers (eyelet issues mainly.) We've had officers contact Danner directly and they have offered to fix or replace the boots as needed even though normally we would return them to our uniform supplier.

The lighter weight Strykers have had some minor quality issues in the last few years. Eyelets popping out after a few months mostly.
Acadias+Ft.Lewis no troubles.
If you are going for dedicated HIKING boots, I'd go with something from Asolo or Vasque.
Are you near an REI store? If you are, take you loaded pack with you, try on boots and they'll help you get good boots. They are pro's.
