Sell me on the H.E.S.T. - I don't get it.

I agree. The RC/ESEE-3 is a fine knife but it is strickly a light utility blade, as far as I'm concerned. For my hands, the handle is just a little too small - with no ergonomic feature (pinky hook, finger groove, etc) other than the front guard to ensure a secure grip.

too true, I *severely dislike* the g10 grip on my RC3, whether it be from handle material or the handle profile or both.

Personally it looked cooler than the Esee-3 to me. Looking back I would have gotten the Esee-3 instead. I think the pry-bar is a cool feature, but it's uncomfortable. The handle scales also do not meet up with the tang of the knife just a little bit so I can really feel the shock of hacking and batoning.

It's probably the best back-up knife I could ask for though. 3" blade will do most bushcraft chores I ask a knife to do. The compartment can hold small psk item such as fishingline, matches, cash etc. I throw this knife in the pack in case something happens to my main knife.

I would have to tell you to upgrade to an Esee-3. If you are looking for something a little different though I'd go for it. If you don't like it, I know the Esee/RATs go fast in the trading and selling forums.

"RYP commenting about it did nothing to make me like it"

Its called "anti-marketing" :)) I will no longer comment on why the DPx HEST is NOT an Izula and why cigars, whiskey, women and the HEST are an acquired taste. Its like my old Land Rover or perhaps even my cop Harley, there are a million people who will give you a million reasons not to own but damn, all you need is one good reason to buy one. :))

For me, the big appeal is in the ergonomics. I find the handle on the 3 and 4 to be just a little short for my hands, the 3 is ok, but the 4 gets uncomfortable after a while. The HEST just fits so nice that I really don't often find myself missing the extra blade length.

Yup, I agree.

RYP telling me NOT to get one Jedi mind-tricked me into ordering a HEST...damn he's good!

My HEST is unrecognizeable from what it looked like to begin with, it's been so used there's no real coating to speak of left on the blade, all the engraved logos and No. 083 are gone... I'm pretty sure the good ol' HEST will get a strip-and-scandi treatment this weekend. A full grind on a 3/16ths thick blade should make for a superb slicer AND beater.

I've apparently been living under a rock my not having a TV. It was my interest in the HEST that caused me to research the "RYP" and the litte skull w/ ball cap on the knife. Consequently I'm now sort of up to speed, and realize I have some books I need to order. :o

I've been hesitant to consider the HEST only because of the pry bar pommel. But the handle that will let me stretch out a little more than the RC4, the cool hide-away inside the handle, and especially the BOTTLE OPENER, all out-weigh the only negative I perceived. Add the fact that just yesterday I was using the tip of my knife to carefully pry on something, I am now in full lust for the HEST just like all of you have been for some time. I finally get it! I takes a little longer for some folks.......:D

Even if you don't like the pry bar and remove it as some have you should still love the knife itself. I love both of mine and have one handy all the time. They feel great in the hand and are fun to use.

What the heck is the draw of the bottle opener on the HEST?!
I've used my RC4 to open bottles with no problem. Just put the spine under the cap and lift up. :D

Works darn near as good as my Vic Soldier.

The HEST looks cool, but I can't see liking any more than my RC4.

Yeah, well with the HEST you can open bottles even if you have one badly injured hand :)

Hmmmmmm..... yeah, you might have me there.
Although, the same is true with my Soldier. But I can't see it being true for my RC-4.

But who cares anyway. As someone said earlier in the thread, you can come up with a multitude of reasons NOT to buy it. But you only need one to BUY it. It IS a cool knife, and I can readily see and admit its usefulness.

Dang.... must resist... must resist. ;)

OK, not trying to be a s*** or anything, but you got me thinking, so I had to try it.

One hand, bottle from refrigerator to glass, with the RC-4. Worked. Not as smoothly as the HEST I would guess, but doable.

BUT AGAIN, all that being said... the more I see the HEST, the more it ... speaks to me. :o It is an intriguing knife.

The HEST has an odd energy all it's own...much like the designer :)

I just bought a H.E.S.T. in a shop. The clever functionality appealed to me.
Here's a great use of the H.E.S.T. for us Belgians:

The H.E.S.T opening a high quality beer. That's what it is all about. I have a H.E.S.T so I will have to search for a Rochefort. It looks like a winning combo!
