Hi Gang. Awhile back, my mother in-law bought me a Strider SnG. That gave me $400. to play with. I sold the SnG to purchase a Sebenza. I sold the Seb to purchase a Mission MPF. Sold the MPF for a Strider GB and I just sold the GB for an Ameican Kami SHFF. :) Sell one one to buy one... it's a good gig. Can anyone relate?

Absolutely & look how many U got to check out, stemmed from the initial purchase .
Of course,we need to thank BFC to play a big part in making this happen, for alott of us

I have to use tactics on my Wife. She doesn't get upset when I only spend a few bucks so I start with a $75 knife, trade or sell for a $100 knife only spending $25. Do this a few times and pretty soon I'm holding a $150 knife!

I sold three Bark Rivers to buy my first Busse a couple of weeks ago. I can definitely relate. ;)

For the longest time that was the ONLY way I got to handle new knives. I received a Bud Nealy 5" Damascu Aikuchi way back in the day.
I traded it for a 3 in ATS-34 Aikuchi and a Spyderco Civilian.
The Civilian Got traded for 3 knives.
The Aikuchi was sold and used to purchase a Benchmade 941BC1 Red plus other knives.
BM was sold to fund the rest of a purchase of a DDRalph Apogee.
The Apogee was traded for a Dale Reif Atrox,
which was then traded for a Unique Graphics Large Sebenza.
The large Sebenza was traded for a customized Microtech Socom Elite auto, a MOD Hornet manual, and an Al Mar SERE2K.
The Socom Elite auto (lizard skin inserts) was traded with some cash for a Microtech Halo III.
The Halo III was traded for a Large Sebenza "P"
The Sebenza "P" was sold and used to purchase a William Henry Spearpoint with Pearl.
The WH Pearl was traded with a manual Microtech Socom for a Damascus and Pearl William Henry Lancet.
The Lancet was traded for a Camillus Cuda Dominator and cash.
The Cash bought my wife an awesome watch for our anniversary.

This is the line of one knife, and it's trade/purchase generations. Money from the tree came and went, but the life can be traced one knife to the next for over 6 years of active knife activity.

Now adays, I'm much more likely to keep what I get. I haven't traded a knife away in almost 2 years. I tend to save up for knives, research the heck out of them, and then buy it to keep.

Things used to be much more exciting.:D;)

Guilty... But I have found the more you build your collection up it becomes easier to trade for what you want...

Ive been getting into trading more and more and ive gone from like 3 0r 4 good ones to about 10 or so without spending any money...not too shabby for a beginner:D

Before the economy went south I bought any knife I saw and liked. Unfortunately this led to quite a bit of waste as I really didn't research very much.
Now that money is harder to come by my buying has become sparse and I try to sell a knife to buy a knife.

I feel everyones pain.

I'm more of a "keeper" myself.

The only knifes I don't have anymore are the ones I've given away, and one that I lost.

I've done that on numerous occasions. Sometimes I buy I knife I don't want just to sell to get one that I do want. It's a vicious cycle. I have sold knives at a loss just to obtain what I want. All that matters is that your happy with the end purchase.

My knife habit coincides with my guitar habit, so the buying and selling gets even more complicated. Buy a guitar, sell guitar buy 4 knives, sell three knives buy a pedal, sell 6 pedals for a knife, sell 70 knives to buy a guitar amp.... It's funny, my wife seems to keep track of my purchases, but not what I sell.

Traded something for a Microtech Ultratech, traded the Ultratech for a Strider AR, traded that for a Busse CGFBM, traded that for cash and a Strider SMF.

Then I lost my mind and traded the SMF (with a Bos heat treat stamp) for a Military and Emerson Super 7. :grumpy:

It all worked out in the end. Now I'm holding firmly onto a SMF SW CC.

Yup, I have sold or trade to get another knife I want. I have been doing this lately as I am unemployed, and have had some custom orders ready.

How many times did you have to add cash to buy the next knife? I'm not familiar with all those knives so maybe each one is worth a little less than the previous?

It seems to me that you can never sell them for what you paid. But maybe that is just with production knives like Benchmade and Spyderco. Because of this, I rarely sell knives because to me I would rather have the knife than sell for a loss, even if it just sits there in a box never used. I can even get wholesale pricing on most stuff and still can't break even.

Nope. I still have nearly every knife I've ever owned. I do eventually lose most of my carry knives, and I've given away a few duplicates, but never sold for the purpose of acquiring something different. If I didn't want it, I wouldn't of bought it. :D

But you'll get no gruff from me for being in a state of perpetual upgrade. For our hobby to stay healthy, it needs all sorts of knife enthusiasts - serious Collectors, casual Accumulators, Users, Swappers... and every imaginable combination.
