Selling a knife for charity (hurricane victims) question

I was thinking of selling a knife or knives, with the proceeds going to hurricane relief via charitable donation. Here's my questions:

1) I could just sell it and send the money myself, and receive the tax benefit myself.

2) I could sell it and ask the buyer to send some kind of proof of charitable donation before sending them the knife. Then they would get the tax benefit, and it might make it easier to sell as of that tac benefit.

I like the idea of #2, but don't know how to do the proof thing.

Ideas?

Most people don't itemize deductions, and unless it's a very expensive knife it's still not going to pay them to itemize deductions, so they wouldn't get any tax credit.

Great minds think alike Dave

I am working right now to try and find a paypal address for the Red Cross. I have a knife to list with payment to the Red cross, a receipt for which can be forwarded to me by the buyer, and the knife can be sent.

I have been all over the redcross.org website, and its achingly slow. I have been on hold now for 20 minutes on the "pay by phone" option.

I want to dump the contents of my paypal account to the red cross, and find a way to direct additional funds there...

Update... my local Red Cross (3rd human I finally talked to) is trying to set up a paypal account for donations... I'll update here and we can spread the word.

Another option would be to set aside a certain amount of money to send along with your local volunteer fire company if they are sending a group down to assist with cleanup/search and rescue missions. Something like a hundred bucks might help pay for supplies, food, water, maybe even search equipment. I would go straight to the local fire chief etc, get the paperwork for it, but I'm guessing that the above would cut out the middle man. Sadly, this will not be cleaned up in a week, so you could sell the knife now and send the money to whichever fire company in your area is travelling to NO to help out in the relief, or to Mississippi, Alabama etc.

You may check ebay. I think they have something set up where funds from sales can go to charity.

The damage is "beyond grasp" in scope, the relief efforts needed will surpass the Tsunami disaster. A company I get commissions from seems wiped out and gone. Many many there on the ground have had their employers destroyed, not even a job to return to, (or home or belongings), can you imagine.

I'll be coughing up somehow and making donations, the number of people in trouble is staggering...

Thanks for that, there are some that look legit, and some that are apparent scams.

Still working on it...
