Attention Selling and Sales Talk rules in Shop Talk - Rules Explained

All I know as a unpaid member I'd sure hate to see all the knowledgeable folks here quit posting. I've learned a TON from folks here that willingly give their advice and knowledge. I don't know what the answer is but I sure hope the folks who are extremely knowledgeable keep posting and giving their advice. There should be away to allow folks that make this forum informational to keep posting for free and post their knives for sale. . I mean I allow for advertising to show up as a unpaid member so evidently someone thinks this site has enough traffic to think it's worth advertising on

I used to pay for a knifemaker membership here. I stopped a couple years ago as I have only ever listed one or two items for sale ever. It just didn’t seem worth the cost. I always thought the rule was selling or advertising requires a membership. The idea that mentioning your customer was happy as being considered advertising seems very bizarre to me. That is over the top. If the knife wasn’t listed for sale here, and the customer has no affiliation with blade forums, that excludes the reasonable selling/advertising rule to me. I’ve had a handful of customers contact me in the form of PM or E-mail. Since that was not solicited, no rule should be considered violated in that circumstance either. For a hobbyist like me, I do this for fun.

I used to post a lot, and offer advice, especially regarding heat treat. After getting shit on by the forum, it can do without my contribution. That seems to be a pattern with this forum. Chase away content providers.
Willie - one of the eternal problems with on line discussions is that there will *always* be people on the line that will argue or criticise. I have seen it literally since 1978 or so. Not gonna change, and won’t be different on any other forum. Honestly, I still struggle with it. Please though, don’t let that dissuade you from participating and contributing)

I gave up the mantle of moderator for the custom and handmade forum because it brought unnecessary stress into my life. As much as it saddens me to see so much talent and so many bright lights of the industry shove off into the sunset over the years, the reality is there are a lot of unabashed assholes out there, the least of which are the moderators, in my experience. That's not a boot licking, but I have worn the shoes. The level of stupid and the level of entitlement out there in the internet is constantly, surprisingly high.

There are a couple different issues being discussed here:
1. Rules - this seems about as clear as it can be in a gray area - shop talk is for discussing the process of knife making, not for promoting your wares b/c that's advertising
2. Is a paid maker membership worth it? That's an individual decision.
3. Can people on the internet be dicks? Yes
