I'm sure this has probably been talked about before, but I've never seen it lol. What is the point of pretty much everyone erasing the price of the knife that they just sold ? It kinda sucks in a way, because there's no kind of reference point for pricing or seeing what a certain knife sells for on the secondary market ? I followed suit in the first few knives that I sold, But now I leave the price up. I couldn't tell you how many times I've commented "I'll take it" then I go back to double check the price and it's already gone, before I even paid lol ! It's just kind of silly, I think.

I am speculating here:

By removing the price it allows future sales of that item to have a bit of anonymity, which in turn allows future pricing to have more range (Read: the ability to raise the price).

Also, sales are nice to keep somewhat private. You never know if leaving financial footprints on the internet may ding you somehow in the future.

I like to handle lots of different knives. I'd also like to lose as little as possible in the transaction.

The reward for me spending so much time browsing the forums is I know the going market value of the knives I'm interested in. When one comes up for sale I'm already aware if the listing is above or below the going market value and I can decide quickly whether to commit to a purchase. This limits my risk of loss if I don't like the knife.

This information is earned through time spent. If someone else needs to research the value of a listed item it gives me the an edge by being prepared to purchase at certain pre-established price points. There's a sweet spot in pricing where if I don't like the knife and decide to resell it I'll only be out shipping and fees.

I also like to list knives for sale at a good price point so potential buyers have to respond quickly before someone else jumps on it.

I've seen lots of knife listings I'm not familiar with sell while I was still researching whether it was a good deal or not.

I share your frustration with people removing the price before payment is made - I routinely double-check the price before submitting payment.
After this happened to me a few times, I started including the price (and a link to the thread) in my PMs to sellers. That way if they delete it two seconds later, I can still check what I need to pay. :)

That's a great idea ! See people complain about kicking the dead horse, but us folks that are newer around here can pick up some good points along the way. I suppose I need to figure out the search options.

Agree and I also provide pics etc via email if requested bc bad folks are jacking your pics left up on the sales thread 😤🤬

A clown 🤡 here on BF took umbrage that I leave my asking prices listed...said I should take em down cause it was no one's "dam bidness" what a knife sold for here on BF -- nevermind asking price is almost always < selling price -- and that I was "stoopid" for leaving mine up for everyone to gawk over.

Long story short, when he was dickering with one of my buds over a listed price, he said his knife was worth it because "Petey got $XXX dollars the same model a couple weeks back." This got back to me thru my bud, who was trying to buy the blade...go figure  .... we had a good chortle over that one. :p

OP - let me give you an example. A few years ago the knifeworks exclusive Spyderco Military with CF scale, titanium lockside, and S90V steel was sold here at the Exchange for $180 or even lower (multiple cases) and nowadays the same knife is being sold for around $360. How useful these prices would be for you, either as a seller or a buyer, if these prices were not erased?

As for knives that are still in production, the asking/selling prices here are pretty much useless, to me (again as a seller or a buyer) because I use the dealer price and the knife condition as the sole criteria to decide how much I'd ask or I'd be willing to pay.

It'd be fine for me for sure. If someone wants to pay some amount I don't want to sell for, I just say "No." If they complain that such-and-such a knife was sold for such-and-such a price, I will either ignore them, tell them to go buy it at that price if they can find it, or if they were polite and I have time, I will tell them "Such-and-such a knife was sold four years ago and has not been produced since, or that listing was for used and mine is new, or whatever reason it is that my price is not comparable with the price you are referring to."

Asking prices do not necessarily reflect sale prices, and furthermore they're just reference points, not some sort of private-party MAP restriction.

This question comes up a lot. I don't sell a ton on here, but I've removed the price and changed it to "SOLD" after the sale was completed. I don't really know why, other than following suit of what I've seen others do on the forum. I think I've changed my mind on how I do this, and in the future I'm going to edit my post to say ""SOLD for $___"

It's none of anybody's business what the "sold" price was. I say that as a person that does not remove my posted price or accept low offers. Just use a strike-through or grey out the asking price and mark as sold

I don't know, i'd usually leave it up but not many else do here. Sometimes i'm just lazy about marking sold so i just write sold over the price.

Some people won't even respond to PM's 5 minutes after they sell something if you're curious what they sold it for. Maybe they think the IRS is out for them, policing their knife sales?

The practice started with flippers like Liu Kang requesting sellers remove prices after his purchase, he didn't like people seeing how much he was marking Busse knives up...that it's become the new normal is pretty sad.

One way around this issue is to get email notifications of new threads in the sales forums. The email that it generates will be the original posting with the listed price, so that even if you go to the forum later and the price has been removed, you'll still have the email (provided the sale price didn't change between the initial posting of the thread and the sale). Of course, a lot of times deals get made behind the scenes and knives can sell for less than the asking price or be traded.

I believe it has been a whole week since last brought up :)
And the answer will always be-the sellers choice to leave or remove
The reasons behind that choice vary, but in the end it is the choice that seller made.
