Selling knives you don't want to sell.

I'm doing it now.

How do you do it without pain?

I need the money because my I put my cat through intensive care for a week before we, sadly ( :( ) had to put her to sleep.

Still, it's hard to let some knives go and just keep a few "keepers".

How do you justify? "I'll get a better collection later"?

I've been thinking, "At least I'll still have my Chris Reeves"

It's tough. It's hard to let go of knives I even "kinda liked" and just carried when I was in the mood.

Soon, when I'm in the mood to carry something odd or unusual I won't have anything like an assisted-opening or mini auto.

Oh, well. I'll still have the pictures, right?

I sold a Rob Simonich prototype bowie a few years ago, what was I thinking? I loved that thing, only 2 were made. Live and learn I guess.

I've sold quite a few things I collect ( not only knives). Some things you miss and most others you completely forget about. I've only sold one item in 20 years that I regret , but it wasn't a knife. It was a WWII vintage Remington made Springfield '03 rifle.

The only advice I can give, is if the item is hard to replace because it's rare or replacement cost , then think carefully. I've never sold an heirloom...

If you enjoy collecting, then one day you'll have fun building a new collection.

I think I've regretted every knife I had to sell, but sometimes you have no choice.

Cheers,
--Dave (sorry about your cat)

I've never sold a knife... I have had some tough financial times when "knife collecting" was limited to saving catalogs, and it took months to save for a $40 folder.

Sell knives to pay bills? No way; that's what credit cards are for. :)

But Wife did make me sell the Lincoln Mark VIII earlier this year, my favorite car ever. At the time I didn't miss it; I had only driven 'er once or twice in the four months since buying the convertible. But now whenever I see that Lincoln driving around town, I want it back. :(

The only way I'd sell a knife, if it had appreciated in value so much that I was uncomfortable keeping it in the house. I'd rather melt them into a blob than sell at a loss...

Good Luck with your tough choices.

I'm in a similar boat. My wife is going back to school this year and we have made some arrangements for finacial assistance, but neither of us are good at living on a fixed income. So some of my knives had to go, there will be others before December is over, but I need to pay the bills.
A few of these that I have sold I will commision again for the same maker and get again. Then there are the ones made by manufactures that have gone under. Those are the most painful but I will find something else to fill the sharp and shiney void.

Sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do. Tough times will end then you can go nuts and buy all things that have come out since you baught the last favorite thing!!

Sorry to hear about your cat. It's hard losing family members, even our 4 footed ones.

I haven't found myself in the situation where I need to sell off any knives, to make up for a cash deficit. I hope I don't have to, but you never know. Would it be hard? Yes! Would I do it before I borrowed money I might have trouble paying back? Yes!

Just sell what you need to and keep the ones you'll miss the most. Good luck in whatever you need to do.

I'm sure your cat would have appreciated the gesture of unloading a couple of knives for what you did for her. :)

Justification? Maybe selling a couple will help you reevaluate your need for extra knives (or any other extraneous material objects) in the first place? I dunno. At least it will give you some time to (maybe) go in another direction with your knife collecting...perhaps you'll find another genre of knives that will interest you in the intermittent time, or you can just replace what you sold off at a later date. Just be thankful that you're in a financial situation where you're not selling your bodily fluids or carjacking folks to pay for unforeseen emergency expenses. And hey, at least you'll still have your Chris Reeve(s). ;)

When I buy a knife which I'm going to sell later, I put it away and don't play with it or even look at it. That's how you get attached. All other knives I use as soon as they arrive. That way I can't sell them. Guess it doesn't apply to knives that were never meant to be used.

You remember why you did it in the first place and commit to ensuring that your collection will be better than ever in time.

A little while ago I needed to raise some cash to help cover an expense that came up all of a sudden and couldn't be put off. I knew there were some of my knives that would figure to sell right away and get the price I was asking. I put all those knives together and picked out which one I could most easily part with (not to say that it's ever easy) and also what kind of chance I figured I might have somewhere down the line to get one again. So, in the end I chose my Hinderer Firetac. Once I made the decision to put it up for sale I told myself that it could not matter anymore how much I liked the knife because the circumstances I was dealing with were more important than owning a knife. If you want to put it in the form of a cliche, I had to think of it like this: it's nothing personal, just business.

Sorry about your cat. I am not by any means "loaded" in a finanical sense right now, but am changing jobs now. Working for the family corporation. And where I work now, if I were to stay would make a decent amount more in the check department and a promotion in the next couple of months. I hate worying about money. I'm young and have had to sell things in order to pay for more important things. It's life somjetimes. You did what you had to do. I'm sure your cat had he/she known what you sacrificed in order to help he/her out would I'm sure be grateful. The next knife you purchase you make will probably have sentimental value to it. Everything has a way of working itself out in the end. Sorry again about your cat, and best wishes.

Sorry about your cat. I made a rule. I no longer sell guns or knives, unless I am upgrading for better quality. My friends like me because sometimes I will just give them a quality knife because I no longer have a use for it and I want them to get hooked on better knives. MV out!

i will never sell another gun or knife. i was in one of those spots more than once where i had to do it. it's been over 12 years and i still have not recovered a fraction of what i sold. its just weird like that, i told myself i'd be able to have it back one day but it never seems to work out like that. several times i've had the money to buy back an al-mar shadow but where the heck am i ever gonna find one? hk vp70? not for what people are asking for them now. sure i want one but it was never worth THAT. and life goes on, lesson learned.

so i just don't sell my treasures. ever. i guess it sucks to be one of my cats.

Life sometimes teaches us some very hard lessons, sell em and move on. Sorry about your cat. You might also consider some type of loan and pay the interest, if that suits your needs...

Tell me about it. I had a dozen knives stolen in 1992. Nothing special and nothing fancy. The most expensive of the batch probably cost $45. But it took over 12 years to find identical replacements.

Tell me about it.Took me awhile to get used to selling. Now I really don't care anymore. This little piece of heaven in Montana, that I own and am trying hard to hold on too.Thank the Lord I have such an extensive collection to sell.

I have sold a number of knives and guns over the years, but thankfully never for the need of money. It has always been a case that I just did not like a particular knife of gun anymore. I regret selling a few of them, but most of what I sold off I don't miss. I have always owned a large collection of knives, so the ones I miss now have been replaced by new ones !!!

Hey, thanks for your words of support. I appreciate it.

I'm planning on purchasing two knives a year now. One custom and one Reeve. :)
