Selling refurbished axes and hatchets

When you say refurbished, are you putting a new handle on it? I mean, at some point I would think it would be tough to get paid for your time if you're doing a full, detailed hang. Then again, the work may speak for itself.

Speaking for myself, when I say I "refurbished" an axe, it means I cleaned it (acid/wire wheel), buffed it to some extent, reground the cutting edge to a usable angle if needed, sharpened it, buffed it, stropped it, and hung it on a handle that I've customized to some degree (octagoning, swell adjustment, "pistol grip,") and then sanded and oiled. This usually takes me a minimum of 4 hours for a full-sized axe, and I rarely get a decent return on that time. I just like rescuing rare old axes, even some that a lot of people would write off as scrap metal.

Keep the shipping low as possible. I saw a nice head I wanted was $10 but was $15 shipping. A US shipper would fit that in a small priority box for $6 so I felt the seller was a gouger and so did a lot of others since it is still for sale.

This is important. To the buyer it's just part of the cost of the axe. If another seller ships for less he gets the sale.

I sell on ebay because it has the most viewers. I've never tried the others. I might get more money somewhere else. There are a couple guys selling locally on Craigslist. They're asking ridiculous prices but I don't know if they're actually getting them.

I can sell hatchets all day long for between 20 and 50 on etsy with a quick turnaround but the axes I've had trouble with. Breaking 60 on a sale seems tough. I'm waiting to see how a ebay auction I have is going and I might just keep hatchet on Etsy and go all axe all the time. My only problem is I have a matching Hults, a 1.25 and a 3.5 pounder, that I was thinking of trying to sell as a set. I think I should go for Ebay, I think that's where all the obsessive people like me are I guess.

I've sold some axes on Etsy for good (75+) money, but it's been sporadic at best. Ebay is a much more consistent way to sell your axes for more money, with a preference for collectable and rare pieces. Etsy is good for well-done run-of-the-mill stuff that's not too expensive.

I'd love to see a picture of the matching set. (With first dibs, of course!)

You have a solid niche on both sites and I'm thinking I might just needs some patience on both.

I pulled the small one from its listing and I'm going to be working on the big one over the next week or so. I'll post pics when I'm done and if they're appealing still please hit me up with a PM. I love these things but I have to move them to new homes or my wife will move me to one.

I look forward to it. Thanks.
