Semi-auto .308?

On the high end of the spectrum, I am looking at a LaRue Tactical PredatOBR or a LMT MWS, and at the lower end I am considering the DPMS and the Armalite SASS models. The SASS guns from DPMS and Armalite look cool and have some nice upgrades, but my Internet research suggests that their accuracy is hit or miss (no pun intended). Everyone praises the LaRue guns, but their wait time is likely over a year. LMT seems like a happy medium, but I really want a 18" or 20" stainless steel barrel and all the guns I've seen for sale have the 16" chrome barrel. Do any of you guys have any experience with any of these rifles? If so, what are your thoughts?

I would insider the trigger as important as the barrel. I got rid of a few ar's due to bad triggers and other traits I did not like. Whichever you chose I would take that into consideration as e best barrel out there won't matter if you have to jerk the trigger.

I would go with the Larue OBR or LMT MWS. My friend's OBR outshoots my MWS, but I still prefer the MWS for some reason. The LMT MWS can be purchased with an 18" SS Barrel, or it can be purchased aftermarket and install yourself (using only an Allen wrench).

Does your MWS have fully ambidextrous controls? The LMT site says that it has an "ambi selector and ambi mag release", but makes no mention of the bolt release. My POF 5.56 is fully ambidextrous, which was a huge factor for me.

I was looking at the Colt 308... ...finally gave up waiting for it to come out. I don't know if they ever started shipping them or not but I'm sure they're hard to come by even if they did.

If guns are still legal after the current buying frenzy I'm going to put together a 300 AAC Blackout. It's a 30 caliber on a regular AR-15 lower, it's basically a necked up 5.56 round. Perfect for loading sub-sonic and suppressing. :) That will put a serious dent in the knife budget.

IIRC the LMT MWS is designed so that you can swap out barrels easily. Get a 16" chrome-lined barrel and then pick up an aftermarket stainless tube.

M1A would be a fun gun but not what the OP is looking for. Too hard/expensive to put optics on and accuracy just isn't there. It was a great design 75 years ago but the AR-10 style is just better, free floated barrel, rail for optics, etc.

Have you look into PTR Industries? Most of their products are semi-auto .308's. I've shot several models, and they are pretty slick.

If you can make a little twisty motion with your fingers you can put a scope mount on an M1A:

and accuracy just isn't there.

"Navy SEALs started using modified M14s as sniper rifles as early as Vietnam. They have used them in Afghanistan and Iraq, primarily as designated marksman and sniper rifles. Navy SEALs keep the M14 in inventory due to its excellent accuracy, effectiveness at long range, and strong takedown capabilities of the 7.62mm round."

Right now I'm leaning towards the LMT, for various reasons. It has mostly ambidextrous controls, good reviews, and not prohibitively expensive. I'm still researching, though. Another one I've been reading about is the GAP-10. Thanks for the suggestions; I'll check them out and post my thoughts.

Its like saying the off the shelf RRA 5.56 is the same as a marksmanship rifle. The military spend serious coin on tweaking certain rifles. One from my unit shot in the inter-service rifle championship. You think they just walked into an armory and grabbed any old rifle off the shelf. NO. They have the rifle built for them.

Back when I got my 308 about 7 years ago, there was not many choice like today. There was Knights, DPMS, M1As, FAL/ offshots, and thats about it. I went DPMS and had it built by JP Enterprise. Took a while, but its still a tack driver. Glad I went the route I went, still was not half what some spend on theirs, but just as nice. Best group to date is my framed target in the man cave. 10 shots, factory Fed GMM 168gr, at 0.7MOA. If it were not for the one round dropping outside the hold it would have been @.46moa.

Every time I take it to the out/ to the range many people ask to see it, when I give them a round or 2 to run thru it they are amazed. From young kids, to seniors, it is pleasant to shot. Really it comes down to cost, time, and what you want. Make the choice yours, it if takes a year, it takes a year. Its best to shoot one if you know someone who has what you want to make sure its a fit for you.

I'm getting ready to "rock" a 9 inch AAC upper myself. 30-30/7.62x39 style ballistics in a smaller and lighter package is nice. I might end up getting a 16" upper too for longer range SuperSonic rounds.

The British snipers seem to be happy with their LMT MWS rifles. The ease of barrel swaps is a very nice feature as well.

Georgia Precision is a good choice if you want something with some custom touches

  • GAP-10 upper and lower receiver, precision manufactured for us from 7075 Billet
  • 1-11.25 5R Bartlein Stainless Match barrel 1-8.5 twist

My shortlist right now is comprised of the LMT MWS, the GAP-10, and the LWRC REPR. Probably in that order, too. Doing my research regarding left handed operation, especially for the REPR.

I know you said semi-auto but you owe it to yourself to check this combo out.

Putting 3 rds through the same hole at 100 yds. Using friends hand loads. I dont know the specs of them. I love this combo. Low recoil-recoil pad is the best ever. Alum bedded stock. Over sized bolt handle. Short throw. Have trigger set to 1.5 lbs pull. Arma-Lite one piece 30mm scope mount. Gun $771. Scope $1199.

I can personally recommend GAP but it is not Georgia Precision ;)

As much as I love the M1A, for sustained accuracy and optics- AR style platform does have advantages. As far as what is issued... when troops M1A's hit the ground in A-Stan, they were equipped with wooden stocks which were soon getting broken at the wrist from guys bailing out of vehicles. I know because I sent a dozen fiberglass stocks to a unit there.

I personally use and recomend LMT. There are other good makers but I can speak for this one.
