Sending Busse back for sharpening?

Just got my SAR5. By far the dullest of all the Busses and Swamp Rats I have received. I guess Jerry really doesn't like them much. :p

Anywho, it will get sharpened by ME! Gonna try and get some rudimentary sharpening skills under my belt on some non-Busse family knives later this week. Then, this SAR5 will get it!! Interesting though... Looks like one side is convex, and the other side a V shape. Anyone else?

Woah.... a atom or 2 at the edge is called the "Look at me funny and I will cut you silly" edge :D
After looking at the edge of your Kiradachi (spelling?) on the probe station, you've got a way to go if you want to get to a two atom edge.

Back on topic, I would send it back if it's as bad as you make it sound. Busse should send everything out sharp, at least hair scraping sharp.

It's also good to learn how to sharpen. I have been lax in that department, but Ban sharpens my stuff when he feels sorry for me. It's a sympathy strop.

My suggestion like the others is learn to sharpen your own knives, its not really that hard to at least have a good working edge. If you use the your knives, they are going to get dull and if you have to send them in often to get them sharpened, they will spend more time in the mail and away from you than with you being used. Also, the cost of shipping saved will buy you good sharpening supplies. I also try not to let my knives get so dull that it is a major event to get them sharp again, thus, another point to have the means to be able to touch up edges at any time. The hardest part in learning is to maintain a constant angle, so a good starting point is to get one of the devices that has a fixture to set the edge angle. I use an Edge Pro if I need to establish a good angle on a dull knife, once you do that, then you can go for the scary sharp. To me, scary sharp is when you got to shave the hair on your arm and it actually takes off a layer of skin! Remember though, a scary sharp edge is not going to be a durable edge for beating on stuff, but rather for more delicate work. It is not hard to acheive a good sharp using edge. :D

Yeah I know. Don't rub it in now. To go from Stupid Sharp to LAMFIWCYS Sharp is no easy task :o

Tim brings up a good point about not letting your knives dull to a point where sharpening becomes a major undertaking. A little maintenance goes a long way

I think that sharpening Busses, or any knife, is one of the best parts of the experience. I use an edge pro. It allows me to get a polished edge at the angle I desire. I usually choose 15 or 20 degrees so I can use my Sharpmaker to maintain the edge. Learning to maintain the angle and using the right amount of force is great experience. I am always amazed at the importance of a light touch and what a gentle pass on a hard stone will do to an edge. I get my knives hair whittling sharp but, of course an edge like that does not last. The bottom line is that if you really like your knives sharpening them is a skill you might wish to acquire. I have been practicing for years and I still have loads to learn from many of the fellas here on BF

WOW!!! Tons of great info and actually I'm Inspired to try it myself at least until after Blade. Then if I can't seem to get it I'll send it in. Thanks again to everyone for your input. It is greatly appreciated!

Great choice!

You are on your way to becoming a fisherman instead of being handed a fish :D

This does not apply to Skunk as he likes to shoot his fish LOL! :p

I second the edgepro. You can get perfection, with any angle you desire. I've only had it for about a year, I can get a edge that will slice off your finger prints, perfectly equal on both sides
