I am looking to purchase an engine for my car, cost is around $2500 for everything with shipping. My problem is that the places I can find the engine at don't take credit and only want to deal with Money Orders or direct deposit. My problem is, I don't want to pay $2500 and get a bad engine and have no recourse. What is the best way to make this deal work?

I would go to a bank and get a cashiers check or the like. That way there will be more of a paper trail if anything should happen. Keep all of your receipts for the check and maybe ask them what recourse you could take if the engine turns out to be bad. I don't think the bank would do anything but you would have proof of payment.

If you use a postal money order to pay for anything and don't get what you pay for that's mail fraud even if it isn't shipped by mail. (Of course it isn't legal to cheat you even if the USPS isn't involved, but if it is that puts it in the jurisdiction of an enforcement agency which has more staff and funding than most.)

Search the net for reports from people who have bought from the sellers you're considering -- they won't be on this forum but they'll be somewhere on the net.

To be honest it Smells a little fishy to me.In any case,if you decide to go ahead with the purchase anyway, better get some kind of written warranty at the very least.

For some reason I would have no trouble sending a knife maker that kind of money, but I would really hesitate under other circumstances. I feel for you, I would really have a hard time sending money like that.

I don't think anybody in the auto parts / speed parts business accepts credit cards, or personal checks either. Some do for a while, but after they get ripped off enough times ... a lot of them won't send anything COD either; too many people decided they didn't need that after all and refused to pay on delivery.

Maybe just try to find the same engine at a larger National Store. Most places will allow you to order engines to specs. Even if they don't advertise it they may be able to get exactly what you want. Try one of the nearest chain stores and see if they can get you what you want. Or check locally and see if there are any machine shops around and see what it would take to get the block and heads and then have done what you want. If you've got that cash I'm sure you can find someone to do whatever you want rather than only looking for a crated whole engine. Maybe even a local major Dealership and check with their parts department. Keeping it local (or close) makes the whole thing easier if something bad happens and hopefully with a couple calls you can get someone to vouch and find out who are the good guys to deal with.

Best of luck,
Shawn
