I'm sending my leatherman wave back for repairs along with a copy of this letter.

--------------------------------------------------------

To whom it may concern,

I have enjoyed using my leatherman wave for a couple years now. I use it daily for a number of things.

I'm sending it to you to have a few repairs made. The joint on the needle nose has alot of play in it. There is alot of play in it when it is open and even more when it is folded up and in the leather sheath. There is so much play in it when it's folded up that it rattles in the sheath on my side well walking around.

One of the first times I used the wave to remove a house door hing pin the fine tip on one of the needle nose broke off. Shortly after that the other one broke off. I filed the tips of the needle nose even so I could still us it. If you think the tips should be replaced please do so.

I also have trouble removing the tools from the side of the handle that has the phillips screwdriver in it. All the tools in that handle are very tight making them hard to get out. Could you please loosen them up.

As you can see I use the knife blades alot. They have been resharpened hundreds of times. Could you please replace both blades.

The file you have put on the wave is great! I also use the file alot and have found it to hold up very well. Thats one great file!

Please look over the wave to see if there is anything else that should be repaired.

I'm in the appliance repair and refrigeration field and alot of different people see me using the leatherman wave daily.
Alot of them ask me "what kind of multi-tool is that". Once I tell them its a leatherman wave there nexted question is always "how do you like it?"

Well guess what I tell them :)

Sincerely,

Do you think leatherman will repair or replace the wave?
How long do you think it will take them?

Anything you would change in the letter I'm sending along with the tool?

Thanks for your input.

My friend sent his supertool in after he loaned it to some idiot who broke the broke the tip of the pliers. Leatherman replaced it no questions asked. I loaned him my supertool while his was in the shop, and as I recall, it only took a few weeks.

I did something really, really stupid with my Wave:grumpy:
I sent it in and 3-4 weeks later a new Wave arrived at my door.
They have GREAT customer service!

They'll replace it. It takes a couple of weeks. I've dealt with Leatherman customer service three times and they have aways been excellent.

Good to know that my Wave would be replaced if I ever destroy it! So far its doing great though!

FWIW, don't count on getting back the same, exact tool.
In my buddies case they just sent him a new one. I guess it is easier and more cost effective than taking the broken one apart.
Cheers,
Ebb

Glad to hear the customer service is good. One of my buddies at work broke the blade on his SideClip Monday night. I told him they would probably fix it with no problems (maybe they'll replace it?), and he could have my PST until his came back-I have a Wave, too.

I suppose they'll find a way to scrap the old one.
I had a problem with a Leatherman Juice where the smallest slot's corners were twisted when I was unscrewing something (I only tried twice)
It took a while but they also send me brand new ones. They have a great customer service.

I recently screwed up the pliers on my original tool, which I've been using for years. They simply fixed it & sent it back. Great warranty!:D

I wore down the plain edge blade on my Wave scraping out pipes and such, also the scissors were just slightly bent from use. I mailed it in expecting to have replacement parts put on, they returned a new Wave! Excellent service-

K Man,

I just have to ask ~ what did you do to your Wave? As for the whole debate, I agree completely. A co-worker of mine had a PST 2 which rattled in the holster. Just rattled, that's it. His wife sent it in and within two weeks he had received a brand new model in the mail, no questions asked. Leatherman has excellent customer service.

Several years ago I was using my original PST all the time at work etc
the file was worn, wire cutters wouldn't work. They replaced the individual components. They also "fixed" several others too. New blade, phillips, with a new improved design. All took only 3 weeks to receive back in my hands all fixed and ready for more fun! What great customer service! Victorinox could learn something there.

Feel like explaining that? I've never had any bad experiences with Victorinox's customer service, and I've never heard any bad stories about them, either.

As for Leatherman, I've never sent them anything. Did correspond with them re: a rusted up Micra (I must have put it away wet), they said they'd replace it free, just send it to them. Never bothered to do so, since I was feeling DIYish, but it's nice to know that they stand behind their products.

What I meant was that if..., Victorinox could turn their repairs around in that kind of time! Don't get me wrong I love my SAKs (Own over a dozen),and probably carry them more often than any of my Leatherman (Own five).

Any time I have needed repair of my SAK it seems to take forever. Usually somewhere around 8-12 weeks. Leatherman is back within 3 at the most.

Today I got my leatherman wave multi-tool back.

I guess what I should really say is today I got a new wave back from leatherman. :D

They have made a few improvements over the old one I sent in.

The first thing I noticed was the top of the serrated blade is differant from the plain edge blade. This makes it very easy to tell the two apart befor opening the blade.

After I opened the needlenose I noticed that they added a Hard wire "notch" at the base of the wire cutters.
The paper they sent back with my wave explaned this new cutter.

On my old wave I could not get the phillips screwdriver or any of the other tools in that handle out without using a key or something else to get them started.

Not on my new wave. All the tools in both handles come out really nice :)

After playing with it a bit I fold the handles back up and notice something else new. They have put in some kind of flat spring in each handle the seems to push the handles towards each other in the closed position.
I think this is to keep the handles from rattling in the sheath. Something my old one did after it had some wear.

If anyone is interested I can start a new thread and post some photo's of the new things I talked about.

I think the few things I did not like about my old wave they took care of on the new one :) :)

A friend of mine found a Leatherman PST while out fly fishing. He literally stumbled on it on the bottom of the river. It'd obviously been there for some time and had quite a bit of rust. He walked it into the factory here in Portland and they polished off all the rust, replaced the parts they weren't able to salvage, sharpened and shined everything, upgraded the Philips screwdriver, and set back to him.

I picked my stepfather up at the airport on day several years ago. He was returning from a fishing expedition of his own. He lives up in Washington state, but often finds a better airfare out of Portland, so he'll drive down here and fly out of Portland. I, of course, asked how his trip was. He said it was great except he broke his beloved Leatherman PST which he's had for decades.

The blade had just snapped right off in two. How? He swears he was cleaning a fish and it just broke. Must have been a steelhead or something... Anyway, he's used that thing to cut all sorts of stuff for decades and it broke cleaning a fish... Well, anyway, he was about to throw it away when I reminded him of the warranty and that we'd be just a few minutes away from Leatherman when we went to the airport for his flight out the next day.

A few weeks later he called to tell me that Leatherman had polished everything up, replaced the broken blade with a razor-sharp new one, replaced his file that was somewhat worn, and upgraded his Philips screwdriver. It was like new.

So, Mr. pahl, it doesn't surprise me at all that you got your Leatherman back in minty condition.

I maybe did not make myself clear, sorry.

The multi-tool I got back is not my old one repaired.
It is a brand new one. :D

Edited to add: I wish I would have taken a photo of my old wave befor sending it back. It looked preaty bad. I really beat the hell out of it.
