Sending my leatherman wave back for repairs

My tired Leatherman PST of 12 years got a bit loose in the handles and I had tweaked the wire cutters and pliers cutting a crab pot out of a boat's outboard prop. This made it difficult to open/use the pliers without the handles folding up. Anyway, I sent it in to Leatherman and asked if they could repair the pliers for me. Low and behold they returned my PST all polished with completely new parts: blade, file, screw-drivers, pliers, the works, EXCEPT one item. They had saved the one handle that had my name engraved on it, and replaced the other handle and every tool. Talk about superior customer service! It would have been way cheaper to just send me a new one, but they took the time to preserve that personal touch that branded the tool as mine. Guess they felt that my engraved name made the tool special to me. I would have been impressed if they sent a new one, but I am more impressed with the action they chose and I'm inspired by their service mindedness and penchant for keeping the customer's needs their top priority.

" After playing with it a bit I fold the handles back up and notice something else new. They have put in some kind of flat spring in each handle the seems to push the handles towards each other in the closed position. I think this is to keep the handles from rattling in the sheath. Something my old one did after it had some wear.

If anyone is interested I can start a new thread and post some photo's of the new things I talked about. "

Pahl,

Could you possibly post any pics of the flat spring you mentioned ?

Thanks in advance.

tardis,
I will take some photo's of it later tonight and post them.

The springs they added really help keep the tool together in the closed position.

If you hold the handles any closer together then about a inch and let go the handles they close them selfs, really nice.

Later,,

There is this flat spring on the inside of each handle.
My old one I sent in did not have this on it.

On this photo you can see the rivet that holds the spring in place.

Also on top the serrated blade they put these notches so you can tell the plain edge blade and serrated blade from each other befor opening the blade.

My old one did not have these notches on top the serrated blade.

If you let go of the handles when they are this far apart they close on them selfs because of that flat spring.

I think that spring some how makes it more solid when it's open also.

The handles on my new wave feel alot more solid when closed and when it's opened then they ever did on my old wave.

Here is the hard wire notch.

My old one also did not have this.
I use the cutter to cut flex dryer vent all the time.
Not sure how hard the wire is but on my old wave it made it's own notch after sometime and I had to file a bur off.

The hard wire notch seems to work well for what I have cut with it so far.

And I can get all the screwdrivers out very easy now.
I really like the improvements they made over my old one.

Pahl,

Fantastic !! Just what I wanted to see. You sure do a great job of describing and explaining your Wave's new modifications.

My Wave's handle do rattle when closed but they tighten up nicely when the pliers are deployed. I think this rattle varies from Wave to Wave because I bought mine in Australia last year at the same time as my father-in-law bought one and his rattles a heck of a lot more than mine.

The slight rattle doesn't really bother me but I was keen to learn what Leatherman had done to combat this and now you've answered my queries perfectly. It would be cool to get it 'upgraded though'.

As for the new serrated blade markings, mine doesn't have those either and I tend to go by the slight machine-angled edge on the plain blade to distinguish them apart.

My Wave does have the hard-wire cutter already.

Great Pictures...what digital camera do you use ?? I'd like to take up macro digital photography myself and am looking for a camera at the moment. Any suggestions ?

Thanks again for all your hard work in creating and explaining the images. This truly is a great forum.

Tardis :)

You could always email leatherman about the rattle and see what they say.
If they tell you to send it in, go for it.

Thats what I first did, emailed them. They told me to send it in they would fix it.
There fix was to replace it. All it cost me was postage to send it to them. It was well worth it.

The camera is a Olympus D-360L 1.3Megapixel. Its a older one that I have had for a couple years now. I don't really have any suggestions for a digital camera. I'm sure there is alot of better ones then what I use and cheaper now.

Thanks again for all your hard work in creating and explaining the images. This truly is a great forum.

No work at all, it was fun :D
Yes, BF is a great place.

Thanks for posting those pics Pahl! I think you lucked out and got an improved version of the Wave that must have just came out. I bought one a few months ago to give as a gift and it had none of those things except for the hard wire cutters, which I think have been around for awhile. Glad to hear that Leatherman's customer service treated you right.

Yeah I love my wave! It's good to hear they have good
customer service. The only complaint I have is the
file and saw are hard to get out.

A few years back, I asked for a Leatherman 'Wave' as a Christmas present...this in the August prior to.

The ladies played a bad trick on me though...it was my last present, my lip was trembling, it was all I'd asked for...the shirts were nice, the other goodies too...but I wanted a WAVE!

The last box of just a few, and there it was...lol :D

I love it, use it daily, no problems yet...
