Separated at Birth??!!

The punch as well as the blade have been thinned, Greg.
They are both razor sharp, and I suspect the punch spent more time as a blade than it ever did as a punch. There is no side-to-side play that you can get from a lot of "punch-twisting".

Oh, neat. Thanks for sharing that additional observation. It makes me wonder even more about the stories it has to tell. :)

Charlie, I agree with your thoughts on the punch being used as a blade. It looks to be sitting quite low in the frame as if the spring has been worn? I doubt the tang is worn or it wouldn't snap as new?

Jamie, most of the punches in my old Case knives sit low, even when basically unused. The punches in both of these sit at the same level when open. I think it has been well oiled all its life! The tang and spring are still fine.
I am carrying that old guy today! In celebration of old age!
I'm 73 today; 25 years or so younger than that knife!:D

Happy birthday!

Thanks for the clarification, it just looked like the used punch was sitting much lower in the frame than the unused. Must have been the angle.

My references tell me that these knives are over 100 years old!
Both marked: The main tang,

The punch,

The bone handles appear to be of early Rogers bone. There are nice three dimensional shields. One knife has worked hard all its life, and the other has had a leisurely existence!
But they both snap like new! Nearly all the jigging, and part of the shield are worn off the one; the other looks crispy! Slight wear on one blade, the other was thinned down so it would still slice. I think the person who nearly wore out that one knife, knew how to maintain a tool, and get the most out of it!
And it's almost like having before and after pics!!:)

Just amazing Charlie. :)

My pleasure Jamie. Of course it is easier for me to see. Folks got a kick out of that knife as I carried it and showed it off today! When I said it was older that me, to my brother on the phone, he said "Impossible! Nothing is older than you!"
Obviously my younger brother!!:D

Glad you like'em t.willy!
