i want to make a knife that's half serrated and i was wondering if you guys had any advise as to how to go about doing them and what knind of patern to use.I was thinking that i would use one large chainsaw file and one smaller one with a patern that would go 1 large, 2 small, 1 large thanks for the advice guy :) chris

I use the files side by side with a thin copper strip in between separating the two. Tape them together and go to town. Do one with say the small one on the right and the large on the left just making starter cuts. Then flip the files so the small is on the left and the large on the right and place the small one in the cut you started previously and start the new large cut. Alternate until they are all marked and then untape and cut individually.

Tape a piece of steel or brass rod to the file(s) and after the first serration is cut, put the smooth rod in the serration and cut the next one. Placement will be perfect. If doing a 1-2-1-2,etc ,or 1-3-1-3,etc pattern you will need to tape up - Large file with small rod; small file with small rod; small file with large rod. Using a spacer strip, like Erik suggested, will allow for deeper serrations. Try it on a piece of scrap steel ground to an edge.

thanks erik for the advise what is the copper strip for is it just a spacer ? ca i use another soft metal i 'm not sure that i have any copper also how thin thanks again :) chris

thanks stacy give that a try as well hope ful i ll get some shop time today or tomorrow thanks again :chris

I just said copper because that's what I have that's thin. Heck some liner material or a couple of pieces of construction paper would work just the same. You just want a spacer between the files. Stacy's tip on the dowel / rod is good too with the 1-2-2-1 combo!
