SERE 2000 strike back!

Dann, I'm really lookin forward to the Sere 2000, and comparing it with the 710. VG10 is ICING on the CAKE :D Everyone has the best things to say about this awesome knife, and it will be my first Al Mar!!:D Now I gotta figure out the EDC thing all over again...:( ;)

Oli,

Congratulations, mate!

EasEWryder,

A SERE 2000 and a BM 710: you're most of the way to the big 3!

Glockman99,

You sold a SERE 2000? I'm glad I'm sitting down!

Where are my manners? Congratulations OliverPlomion!:)

Maximus Otter, Dann and I actually traded for the Sere 2000. What is the "Big Three" ? I have a 710, Sere 2000(in the mail)... perhaps the only missing knife is a Sebenza? :)

EasEWryder,

It's a personal joke thing of mine. I regard the Big 3 of folders as:

SERE 2000
BM 710 (HSSR in my case)

And one of the following:

Sebenza
Spyderco Military in S30V

Just posting to say that you made a good choice.
I've had my SERE 2k for about 6 months now, and I'll probabily be carring it until the day I die. Amazingly smooth opening, and tough as hell. Sure, mine's a litte banged up, but that's what this knife was built to take.

The Sere is a great EDC. I love the clip, it sits deep in the pocket, and the action is very smooth, and you get that satisfying loud "clack" when opening it. One improvement for me would be thumb grooves. Other than that it's suh-weeet!

The SERE 2000 that EasEWryder is getting from me is even better than a "stock" one in that I smoothed the edges of the G-10 scales all the way around, and slightly rounded the sharp edges of the liners. I also removed the sharpness off the tip of the thumb-studs. The SERE 2000 that I carry as my EDC has also had those small improvements done to it.

It's sort of funny that I sent you the SERE 2000 today, and a guy here in Washington State is sending me/has sent me a Benchmade 710 from another trade. It looks like on Monday, I'll have a chance to compare a BM 710 to my remaining SERE 2000.

Can't wait to hear what you think of the 710 Glockman! Did you get the PE or CE? M2 steel? I have a 710HSSR. If I did it again I'd probably go with the 710HS, but sometimes the serrations are handy.

  Dann, you aren't makin' the wait any easier... :( :D ;)

Maximus Otter, I just got back from the knife store to check out the remaining of the "big three". They only special order the Military for some reason, but had some Sebenzas that were H-O-T! Too bad I am all tapped out 'til Blade West;)

It's PE, but I didn't even bother to ask about the steel...(As long as it isn't 420J2, I'll be happy...LOL...).

...I went down and dug out my SERE 2000 with serrated (partial) edge and am now carrying it.

It IS a darned nice piece of work:)

Thanks to this thread for reminding me about it.

if everything you bought was made that well, your money would go a lot further-i still love my microtechs but the sere and nomad hold their own at my house:)

I got one! I got one! :D :D :D
Oh man is thing TOUGH!!! I can't give up carrying my 710 or MPC, so now I gotta figure out how to get away with adding this one...!!!

At first, I was like, the blade is so small... I don't like the clip... blah blah blah:rolleyes: Then the Brain kicked in and I took the clip off, held it and... "CLACK!", all gravy!!! I LOVE THIS KNIFE and will NEVER EVER LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT IT!

I have full confidence in it ONLY EXPERIENCED when I got my MPC, my Steel Heart E, and oh yeah... the 710. The Harsey tactical has been bumped off my list by the SERE 2000. I was gonna save for a Sebenza, no more. Everything I personally wanted a Sebenza for has been fulfilled by my new SERE 2000. It is the best thing for me as I am pretty low on the income totem pole. ;)

Thank you Dann!!! All your improvements on the knife you sent me makes it fit like a glove in my hand!:D

All you SERE 2000 fans, RIGHT ON!!!:D

Glad to hear it! You'll like it even more the more you carry it. I hear you about the initial complaints. In pictures of the knife, the blade to handle ratio makes the blade look kinda "off" I guess you could say... It's one of those knives that just plain works, and works damn well. It will really grow on you.

:D :D :D All your S2K's are belong to us!! :p :p :p

Add me to the S2K aficionados list. Mine is the PE black blade and just feels so solid and smooth. I agree that the "Big 3" list mentioned earlier consists of Al Mar SERE2000, Spyderco Military, and Benchmade 710.

I compared all three (and a few more, like the Camillus Dominator) and the best overall quality goes to the S2K, for sure.

One nice extra about the black blade is that you can open it easily by applying pressure on the side of the blade behind the stud and opening with the same motion of a Spyderco.

I also took of the clip and will soon take a Dremmel to the liner to make it a little easier on the thumb. It would not be that big of a deal if it were not for my frequent opening and closing to enjoy the ultra-smoothness of the thing.

I've been trying to handle and carry my SERE 2000 more. It does carry well, I forget it's in my pocket. :) There's just something about the grip though. It feels like the steel liners are cutting into my hand. Has anyone tried smoothing them? It's good in the fact that it's grippy, but it's uncomfortable at the same time. Also it would have been nice if they notched out the liners where your thumb rests, like on a 710. My thumb skates up the handle on those skate like sharp steel liners. :) It feels like I'm gripping a hockey skate is the best way to put it. :)

No matter what someone pulls out of their pocket its not going to be a whole lot better and for the money probably not better at all-
have heard comments about knives being better(military,710) these are subjective opinions and now having handled them I wonder how this conclusion could be drawn hands down- i can see having a favorite but the quality of an Almar has not been compromised by either of these knives. By the way I like them both and could have easily fallen for either -if iI had not seen the Almar sere 2000-The spear point blade in my opinion is by far the most versatile-but a repetative task could lean more toward the slicing ability of military or edge holding of 710 hs-but for whatever comes your way-slicing,hammering, self defense, fingernails and letter opening etc -I`ll take the sere all day long- the quality and substance are overwhelming their competiton --imho :D (I am a newbie)

Yes, I have smoothed the sharp-edges of the liners on all 3 of the SERE 2000's that I've had and it IS a big improvement. I used a small file to slightly round the edges, and then 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper to make it smooth and polished. I did the same with the edges of the G-10 scales, and the tips of the SHARP thumb-studs. I ALSO cut a thumb-notch on the other scale to match the right-hand side.
