My birthday is coming October 21st, and I need to find a knife to ask for :D

I'm not really sure which knife I want (Maybe a Spyderco Persian, maybe an Al Mar..dunno) but my question is: which knife do you guys like better, and why? I know the SERE is more of a utility, whereas the Shrike is more of a gentlemen's knife. I'm not sure which one to get. I love the looks of both.

Newgraham offers the Shrike with Micarta scales, or on the new version, with G-10. I think I want the Micarta to make it look more gentlemanly, but any reasons why I should get G-10 instead?

Thanks for your help guys.

I had both, and ended up trading away the SERE 2K. They are both fine knives, but my preference was for a tough, sleek and lightweight folder, the Shrike. The SERE 2K was perfect in construction, but it is bulkier, heavier and for some reason the blade always seemed a little too short considering the size of the knife. The SERE 2K is like a powerful tank, and the Shrike is like a high-tech fighter jet.

How about a Benchmade?...Maybe something along the lines of a 710 or 520?

I think I should stick to the SERE and the Shrike..unless you reccommend something that REALLY catches my eye. Those two knives are kinda blah in my opinion :foot:

Right now I'm leaning towards the Shrike with G-10. I like the way the handle is styled, and the 4" blade is a plus.

personally I'd go with the SERE but since you are leaning towards the shrike with g10 (good choice ;))trust your gut it will pay off.

Have you handled both models side by side? If possible to do, that would probably decide it for you.

I just picked up a micarta Shrike the other day and the more I handle it the more I like it. For it's size it is light and well balanced. The action is super smooth and easy, overall I just love the way it feels in my hand. I don't know that I'd consider it a gent's folder given it's size, but it does have a certain elegance and style about it.

For the SERE 2K I can really only reiterate what was said before. It's a tough and very well built knife. I almost got one but for the fact that the store clerk showed me a BM 520 and, everything else being pretty much equal between the two, I loved the Axis lock. You may want to check out the 520, I think it's awesome. You also mentioned the Persian, and that's another great knife. It has a lot of style and substance, solidly built with great fit & finish.

I believe you would be happy with either Al Mar model in terms of getting a quality knife, so I guess it may come down to which one is better suited for your daily use.

No ones said it yet, so I guess I will.....

Ask for both!!! I mean come on, Christmas is just around the corner so get one now and get the other later ;) But if you can't get both it seems like you're set on the Shrike. Go with your gut man and Happy early Birthday. :D

have had both the shrike and the SERE and liked the SERE much better myself, FWIW.

Ok, How about the 960 or a 940Ti?

:D

A nut i am, for Bm's.

Just a couple more choices is all i am suggesting.

Peace

I've handled the Sere and the Shrike in G10 and I own a Shrike in Micarta. The Sere is a cool knife and is serious business. The Shrike has a similar build and really differs only in design (and slightly thinner blade, I think). Between the two designs, I like the Shrike - mostly because it's a relatively unique design and the handle seems to fit my hand better. Both are not slim knives and you might want to try to handle at least one of them before buying.

Between the micarta and the G10, I'd go for the Micarta. Micarta just feels better - it's smooth and sleek and both cool and warm to the touch, like ivory. It's also getting harder to find knives with good micarta these days. G10 is great and all, but it's everywhere.

But among the three choices you've listed, you really can't go wrong.

I've thought about it, and I think I will probably go with the Persian. I know this knife is awesome, lots of people have said good stuff about it.

Anyone else want to say anything about it?

I handled a Persian for the first time this last weekend and didn't really like it. Nice knife, cool lines, nice bolsters . . but it took me two hands to close it and the micarta had a few sharp edges. The Shrike and Sere are purely one-handers.

Not to bash Spyderco, but the Shrike is just a tad classier, in my opinion. I just never cared too much for Spyderco's pinned pivots, and prefer an adjustable screwed-together pivot. Spyderco doesn't use washers on their pinned ones, like the Persian, while the liner-lock Shrike does. This makes for a smoother opening.

I have handled all of them, and have a fairly wide hand. The Persian would be my choice, it's such a beautiful knife, except it is just too short, and with that shaped handle, I can't get a comfortable grip. The Shrike just slides into place, in different grips. Excellent design. Go for it with the Micarta. You won't have any problem holding on to it, and it looks and feels much less industrial than G-10.

It's nice to see Al Mar talk. This company just isn't talked about enough. GREAT knives. Easily as good as Spyderco and Benchmade, except they don't have many models. EASILY the best G10/linerlock "tactical" execution out there.

Don't forget. The Shrike is tip-down carry and the SERE 2000 is tip-up.
(though I did have my Shrike converted)

The Shrike is actually more of a fighting design. WAY to big for a gentleman's knife.

The SERE 2000 is stronger in the tip.

I have the Micarta Shrike. It's really nice. The micarta is a little more slippery than the G10 dry, but Micarta gets sticky when wet.

I THINK (I'm not at home) the SERE 2000 has thicker liners.

Every knife lover needs to own a SERE 2000 sometime in their lifetime, so that may be your answer.

Could someone take a comparison picture between the Shrike or SERE and another knife, width-wise? Just how wide are these knives?
