Serious chemical reaction

hellgap,

Is there a reason why you decided to use potassium permanganate as a coloring agent?

It has lots of uses including wound treatment & water purification, but it is also a fire-starter due to its oxidation capabilities...

Did you just like the color? ;)

Being an oxident the Permanganate oxidizes the organic traces on the antler, even bleached antler to a dark brown. It even turns wood and skin brown.

KmNo4 or Postassium permanganate hasnt ever given me a problem. I mix up 40 to 50 pounds in regular water every night here at work and it hasnt ever acted wild with me but what were using may be alittle different than what your using.

Cwl and everyone I got this Potasium permnginate like 30 plus years ago from a local pharmasist . I never even knew it was harmful til this event occured. Taxidermists years ago use to use it to dye horn from pure white to a nice chocolate brown . It does work well but never knew how bad this stuff is. I also dont want this threat to get out of control.

There's no reason for the thread to "get out of control". People who are aware of the hazards have simply pointed out it needs careful handling. Understand the hazards and take proper precautions and most any chemical can be handled safely.
The MSDS for potassium permanganate.
