It's a fun thread, Steve, it really doesn't matter. No one is actually prepared for their neighborhood to burn down during riot or for an End of the World scenerio. Some make preparations, of course, but when critical events, life and death events occure, I don't think 'preparation' is the right word. If you thought you were holding a place, or thought you would be moving, it would make a difference, and what you thought you would be facing, of course.
Anyway, et al:
There is nothing wrong with the M1A as the sole rifle. It has power, and is very user friendly and reliable. It is also very accurate. Being a Nato round, .308 ammo is plentiful. STatements that it weighs too much are only relevant in comparing 308 platforms to 223 platforms. Yes, 308 platforms weigh a bit more. Not as much as you'd like to think, as the last Colt Hbar I owned was 7.9 pounds and my M1A is about 8.5 Peer 308 rifles to the M1A are as heavy if not heavier than M1A.
Weight is important in how much you can carry. I don't think anyone can count upon being in a fixed or moving situation. I think when disaster strikes, it could be either or both.
There is nothing wrong with the Ruger mini 14. Last one I had would do an 1.5" with iron sights at 100 yards. It is more reliable than the AR systems. That is my opinion. It is not as accurate as the AR's. You can accurarize it, but then the question is why bother and not just get an AR with the extra money? (because you wanted something that fit you, was short and handy and reliable, is the answer)
It is true after market mags for the mini have not been consistant. However, I do believe there are some quality mags available for the Ruger, and I also advise anyone counting on mags to test them in the rifle first anyway.
I would not feel helpless had I a Ruger Mini 14 at the End of the World. I think at the End of the World we will feel helpless, but it will be for other reasons than the accuracy difference between a AR and a Mini 14.
The AK systems are all pretty neat. I would not feel bad if that were in my hands either.
Rusty is gone, but I'd feel pretty good with many of you by my side at the End of the World. As good as one might expect to feel on that day, anyway.
I plan on dying in my bed while asleep with a sudden pain in my side, but I suppose that is just a plan.
