Serrated ARK?

There was some talk a while back of a serrated ARK in the works, with (IIRC) Sal saying that they had gone as far as prototyping it. I've been waiting hopefully ever since, fingers crossed that maybe they'd announce it at this year's SHOT show.

I haven't seen anything in this year's literature, or in the coverage I've seen of SHOT, so I'm pretty sure I'm just going to be disappointed. On the outside chance, though, has anyone seen or heard anything I might have missed?

One of the designers is on here and he's mentioned it's being proto'd but hasn't hinted at a release date yet.

It seems like Spyderco lets new knives spend a fair amount of time in the prototype process before release.

Which is a pretty belt and suspenders way to do it.

Best way to do things, if you ask me. I've never handled a Spyderco knife that I felt hadn't had enough time in R&D. Meanwhile, with some other manufacturers I won't name...it's just not at the same standard.

Okay, but taking a proven design and adding a standard serration pattern, particularly when the blade steel in question has always had serrations because of its poor edge retention…

What am I missing, here?

Could be the sheath, could be real world demand, could be something unpredictable.

A lot of of folks have been tripped up by a small change to a proven design that turned out to be a step backwards.

Sal hasn't mentioned a time frame yet, sorry.

Always good to remember how many differerent models Spyderco's working with simultaneously, with factories in the US, Italy, Japan, China, and Taiwan.

It would be easy enough to serrate one of the plain ones, if there was an instant gratification issue happening...

I'm not trying to say that I understand better than spyderco, I know I don't, but I'm missing something here. It has been stated that the Ark was created as a self defense shower knife for our brave female soldiers. In my opinion, a self defense knife is better off serrated. If I'm in a position where I need to use a knife in self defense, I don't want to just slice the person. I want the threat gone, and it seems like a serrated edge could provide that with a lot more ease than a plain. Also, it's h1. With my assist, the straight part has gone dull and the serrations are still wonderfully sharp. So I really don't get it here. Better self defense aspect, better edge retention if used in other instances. If this same knife was made serrated, it would be my go to edc boot carry. However, it's not, so until it comes out I will walk with an izula.

I was just handling my ARK just a little while ago. Practicing deployment and grip. Wish it had a little longer handle. But it does fit the purpose of a functional blade in the lightest usable package I've ever had.

If a serrated version came out, I'd buy it. With the blade shape, I could see how it would be quite damaging without hooking up on clothing and such (like I suspect could happen on my Matriarch 2).

But I've never gone after anyone with a blade, so I'm just guessing. However I am tempted to stuff up some old t-shirts just to see how they do on clothing to get to the body where it counts.

I also wonder why didn't they make it serrated the first time.

I really dig mine and have been making noise to get some info on the serrated proto.

I'd buy one in a heartbeat, and most likely two or three more to gift my loved ones.

I enjoy my ARK a lot, there's almost nothing I don't like about it.

And I finally found a knife that I do shower with and just don't care about corrosion issues. God bless H1!

Still waiting, Sal and Spectre, still waiting...

Sorry for the delay in updates, been busy lately and much communication has fallen behind. Especially to you John. Apologies.

The serrated version works well. The delay has been on the sheath. We are in the middle of a mold change to modify the sheath. The consistency in holding the knife secure has not been reliable enough, and I'm a fuss-pot about neck knives being secure, so we've been experimenting with a number of sheath designs over the past months. What we've come up with is a bit different, not as lefty friendly, but far more secure.

Not to derail, but this is why I will pick a spyderco knife over any other. The service is so personable for such an affordable product.

Awesome! Thanks Sal. Really amazed at how you post in our threads and pop up from time to time!

I love the company, this being one of the main reasons.
Just to know, any ETA for a prototype= Maybe this 2016 will the final version or the proto see the light? Thanks, Sal, and have a nice day!

You are really an inspiring person and model to me, Mr.Glesser.
Thanks much

This just sold a ARK!

I have 3 out of 4 blade style's of the minimalist.. Love the size and carry horizontal on my back belt.

Maybe I'll wait for the new sheath version..

Waiting for a custom Dragonfly 2 sheath, so I can carry in place of the minimalist. Like it's a fixed blade.

Mmmmm, fixed blade DF2!

8 out of 10 assaults are against males. The local and 3rd country nationals working on our bases commonly have same-sex relations, and I've seen ANP raping an animal. They don't care about the sex of the person they're raping.

Sal, no worries. I wondered if the sheath was the issue. I hope you got my email.

Oh, my mistake. I must have read that incorrectly somewhere! Thanks for the correction, I actually do appreciate it. I like to know when I'm wrong.
