Serrations or not on a SD knife?

You can find the Janich video on youtube, search The Edged Weapon Threat. He uses a box cutter and what appears to be a CE D4. No matter the configuration of a particular blade you cannot negate the fact that you will still inflict severe damage on your attacker.

Oh, and .45;)

I own all plain edge knives and will most likely continue to do so, BUT I recently watched a video on how to sharpen serrated edged blades (it was posted on this forum, if anyone can find it that'd be great). I think the guy used some sort of byrd knife, and it seemed to cut through leather and rope pretty easily, without much sawing action.

if serrations are so superior to plain edge why do so very few of the custom fighting folders come with serrated edges? you know the customs designed from the get-go as a fighter, like the emerson CQC8, '13, or '6, or the pat crawford kasper or perfigo? its because a plain edge is at least as good and in some instances better.

i've seen links to cutting tests of everything you can imagine, and the plain edge comes out on top every time.

same thing with the rope cutting tests on bowie style knives, all plain edge.

not that SE is bad, i like my spyderco police and civilian in SE for example, but SE offers nothing over a PE except it dulls slower, and takes longer to sharpen.

sure it will work in a self defense scenario but really anything with a sharp edge will also work.

It depends on many factors. On something like the spyderco civilian there is no downside to the serrations.

The most important thing is that for sd serrations must be absolutely 100% razor sharp.

Serrations IMO help cutting through material like said leather denim etc.
Ive cut myself as im sure most of you have with both and a PE so much easier to fix up as serrated leaves a real mess.
Look at sharks theeth they are meant for tearing through tough skin etc eveloution made them that way for a reason.

I could be wrong but I have been under the impression that sharks latch onto their food and its thrashing about combined with the shark's head movement cause a similar effect to sawing.

Serrations will slash better but I don't think I would use it as a stabbing weapon because you might have a problem getting the knife back out. I wouldn't bother with serrations on only half the blade though, stick with the plain edge and maybe think of a full size 8.

I have found SE to get hooked on denim and cloth (when applying slash cuts to a target). Especially when you have sharpened it a few times and the teeth become more aggressive. This however does not happen with a plain edge and therefore I would recommend a PE.

No links to the video. It's from a self-defense set produced by the NRA, mostly for guns. I have a subscription, but I've never seen them advertised anywhere on the Net.
