I'm just curious, why aren't Beckers offered with serrations? I'm not a fan of them on larger woodworking blades. Is it as simple as that?

Thanks.

If you know someone who can make an NSN order, you can get a BK2SG - serrated (scalloped) government. It is restricted to Military sales - I work for my State and cannot purchase it which I think is BS - I'm not in the Military but I work at a State University, for a much lower pay rate that I can command, because I like to feel that I am helping out society instead of working for a greedy corporation who only cares about profits.

I love serrations and am trying to get my hands on one. Don't bother calling Ka-Bar, they will tell you no. I believe they have a contract set up with the US Government that prohibits them from selling them retail.

You can find them on PX/BX on military bases, so if you have access and can get on one go look. If you find one pick me up one also! They also use to make a BK7SG as well.

Personally I'm glad, I hate surrations.....

And correct spelling. :D

Some of the Becker blades were offered with serrations, but the only one I know of now is the BK3 and the BK2. You have to be Gubment to buy the BK2 serrated, and just anyone to get the serrrations on a BK3.

My guess, Ethan doesn't like them, and therefore are not available on his designs. That is a guess, not sure.

I don't like them, they may stay sharper longer, but they are a pain to sharpen in the field.

Good luck.

you can buy scalloped Camillus BK2 and BK7s on ePray from time to time. they don't tend to go for a lot, because well, nobody likes them and they don't sell well. not even to the govt ;)

it didn't work very well on the fabled BK8 either, a committee designed government model.

those RAMPS people don't like on the BK7, BK9 and B10? hello, government requirement ;)

then again, some people do like/want those things for various reasons. having choice is good.

Serrations perform quite well but god help you when its sharpening time, then again I can barely sharpen a straight edge... the woes of a newbie. I loooove the thumb ramp and idk why people hate/file them, I find they give a better safer grip. If you want serration go with an esee, they have that straight serration thats part of the main edge. Ive only seen it on esee and bayley but IMHO thats the only serration worth owning.

Serrations are great for folders in my opinion, fixed blades not so much although I do like Tom Veffs...

easy to sharpen too!

Ok - not that I want one (I don't like serrations at all) but why the heck do you have to be government to get a serrated BK2? Who says and why?

I believe they made a contract with Ka-Bar/Becker that states they can only be sold to Military Personnel through the NSN system. I am a Government employee at the state level and cannot buy one. It is at a University so it wouldn't help with my job, but it would make me happy and happier with Becker and Ka-Bar in general.

They should change the wording from Government to Military. The verbage would lead me to think that a clerk working for a Senator or Congressman should be able to buy one.....or any employee of the State or Federal Government. They do specify that it is NSN only, though.

I was going to do a thread on scalloped gubmint Beckers. It's on the to-do list.

Yeah, i still can't understand why you would have to be government to purchase a serrated blade? Don't have alot of experience with serrated blades, but the only one that i really like is on my Leatherman wave. I couldn't see the benefit on a larger knife though.

Nah, the first time I process some of my old wood for firewood at mi casa, it would chew those teeth up. I likes me a a full edge.... I keep my knife sharp enough that anything I would need to cut with some serrations I can just cut with the edge...

The reason is it's a Mil contract. Simple as that.

My guess is Ka-Bar wouldn't sell enough of them to the public, but the Mil. Asked for them and signed a contract for X amount. Therefore Ka bar gets their money, and a Mil entity gets the product they specified. It's just like anything else that is made strictly for the Mil.

If you really want one I think I know a guy who can hook you up, your local recruiter;-)
I kid, I did just see one for sale though, maybe here, or Kifaru forums.

New here, first post. Beginner/intermediate as far as functional knives go. Hello. :)

This is pretty much my take as well. It seems less encumbering to carry a serrated folder, and not have chopping or batoning impeded with serrations on the big fixed blades.

A friend and I were just debating this over the weekend. I recently showed him my new BK2, so he got some blanks from work to try to emulate the design. He was talking about adding serrations though, and I contested that he'd be better off with the full, straight edge for the knives intents and purposes.
He said that he wanted to put the serrations on the back of the blade, because it would "look cool as hell" What the?... I told him it was his knife, but he'll probably find the design more limiting than useful. I also chuckled when I pictured the baton getting stuck on the serrated edge.
Not to bash my buddy, he's a good guy, just a little gung-ho sometimes.

I'm pretty sold on my BK as designed and a nice combo-edge folder clipped in my pocket.

Take care!
