Setback for knifemakers shipping to AUS buyers

Touche, Tom. Lesson learned.

Hope to see you at the Blade Show. You know what I look like (no hiding here :D).

This was never a personal attack on you, Tom. This was a notice to anybody sending knives to Australia, whether big or small. The fun we were having was with the folks in Australia who seem to mistake fantasy knives for "serious militant weaponry". To us, there's a clear distinction between the two.

But anytime a knife is confiscated (in the mail) anywhere, and the story sensationalized, it's a setback for all of us. :(

Agreed. However, you'll see disclaimers on many websites that specify that it is the consumers' responsibility to ensure the purchase and possession of such items is within the laws where they reside.

Laws apply to "custom" makers as well. For instance: You're not supposed to sell knives with certain natural materials overseas. There are also many laws governing the manufacture, sale, and transportation of automatics. One would hope that all of the makers here understand and abide by such laws.

I believe if more people paid attention to the laws governing knives, these stories wouldn't get started in the first place. ;)

Dan:

I get emails on a daily basis asking questions about my tutorials. I don't know if it's helped my sales, but that wasn't the reason for putting them up in the first place.

If anyone wants to see what tutorials I have available, they can go to www.ClubPhoto.com and enter my email address.

Please excuse me if I don't get back to your emails promptly. Right now, I'm trying to get ready for the Blade Show. ;)

Sorry, guys.

Didn't intend to offend anyone.

Hey Tom
Only reason I brought up your name is because I've seen pictures of your custom work and this stuff is an obvious departure from it. Wondered if it was really you or not.
I'm not out to judge anybody for the designs they come up with, if its selling and paying your bills then more power to ya. Your mohawk pattern is one of my favorites of all the framelocks I've seen. Personally I'd like to see some of those knives being made by some of the main stream production companies that make higher quality stuff, because then maybe I could afford one ;) But I'm not going to tell you how to do your business, or what to make.

Those are my designs. I have nothing to do with manufacturing them or distributing them

You certainly don't need to apologize to me Tom. Just the opposite, I owe you one. I didn't realize they were your designs. I do take shots at people once in a while but this was not one of them.

I was being critical of the Government and tried to put in the disclaimer to our Aussie members so they wouldn't be offended. I didn't even think about one of our members designing those knives.

Sorry again! :footinmou

Most Government's, including the US, ban some Knives. I'm not surprised that one didn't get past customs, but that's no criticism of the knife.

I've had stuff seized at the US border in complete eror because the guy thought I was trying to illegaly remove it from Canada. I was polite and understanding: imagine a job where every single product in the world is something you have to know something about. I was a guest, and I was glad to have been treated that way too.

The funniest part about that was that having seized it, they then returned it since apparently they seize so much stuff it's a burden to have to destroy it all. That was pre 9/11 I could afford to see even some humour in such maters, though the idea that much stuff is trying to find it's way into the US was sobering too.

First line of defence as far as I'm concerned

Greeting thrill seakers.

I have had some legal knives come over and the pakages opened by customs.
They were alowed through no problem just a sticker saying the parcel has been opened.(I am in western Australia)

Another forum member here lives about 40miles away he told me someone he knew has six customs men roll up at his house because he ordered a bali song.

They used to sell them here made of plastic handle they were part of a fishing kit which came with a japanees fishing reel " Diawa" or similar. So from selling to 12 year olds to fish with to 6 customs it is a very wide change. Collecter were given the option to apply to keep what they had. I got rid of what I had.1 plastic and one metal. I did not like them much both had been given to me by other blokes that did not like them either. So I don't personaly feel any loss. That is not to say some people may be quit hurt by it. I did not like loosing my guns but you have to live with it or move.

The western australia police may be differnt to the eastern states. Wa no double edges weapons. I started making my letter openers single edge just to be sure.

There is probably a copy of the weapons act on the wa gov site but I have not checked.

The laws are all stiched up so that even if you have a small folding pen knife in the right circumstance you will be liable for a charge.

In the paper here yester day a local gun club official was charged with importing illegal firearms.

So the moral of the story is check to see if it is legal and no problems.

For those of you that like the knife in the artical you should have a look at a similar / better one on the cover of KNIVES fall 1993 vol 7. The lady with it is even nicer. Gil Hibben had a part in it.

Pendentive If you want a copy of the weapons act and can't find it on the
wa.gov. what ever site I can send you a copy if it would help to put you mind at rest that you were not going to get your work seized.

Hi guys, I firmly believe the hole story was a croc. A few pages further in the same newspaper ran an ad I booked for the up comming Australian Knifemakers Guild Show. What a bunch of clowns, anything to sell more papers.

On a serious note, two police officers shot and killed a phsyco armed with two samurai swords this morning. He got close enough to take out their patrol car's rear window. We never seem to run out of nuts who think they imortals from the movie Highlander.

Yeah im sooo annoyed with that idiot. I think they are banning swords in Victoria because of so many incidents with swords and i thought it must be BS because i dont hear about many of them untill this mental case came along.

Will they let you keep swords if you are in a collectors club or the likes?
They should.
