Setpro interface

Mike Kelly, that was both bold and kind of you to post. It's always good when a vendor will get on here and expain things to us and address issues. It can't but help business in the long run. Knifemakers are very product loyal once they're happy...:)

I think if you add a flow chart of the programming sequence to the very beginning of the manuals it would help. "A picture is worth a thousand words...yadda yadda"

Now to call you folks and hopefully get some help switching this new chip over to Fahrenheit. Watching last night's run in Celsius was sort of a disconnect for me.

What's the possibility of me converting to a RampmasterII????

Thanks for any help.

Update:

Converting from C* to F* was a snap, just the right keystrokes. The lady talked me through it in 30 seconds. Thank you, ma'am!

I "introduced" myself vis-a-vis this thread, and she was aware of it. I left my number and she said Mike Kelly (one of the owners, BTW!) would call me regarding conversion to a RampmasterII.

Though sometimes it sounds brutal reading these threads, we are able to effect change that benefits us as knifemakers. We got Admiral to listen to us, too. I think that is a big benefit of forums like this!

I'll report back here once I get info on the Rampmaster conversion. :)

Wow, this thread really took a turn for the better. Mike Kelly, I commend you for stepping in and letting us know how you company will be conducting business from now on. As Fitzo says, we are a loyal bunch if we like a product. I love my furnace w/RM2 and your response solidifies my loyalty to Evenheat in the future. I am very pleased to see that the manufacturers pay attention to these threads and that the customer comments can have such a positive impact.

Special thanks to the fine gentleman who emailed them with a heads-up about this thread! I won't name him, but he makes a pretty nice knife, too! :D

dang i guess i should have waited a bit for the RM2 to use the Pc port
o well i am happy with my kiln and can tell anyone who wants to know bang for the buck evenheat is the one least i think so:)

I was glad to hear from Evenheat about the controller. I got my 22.5" oven on November 2nd and before I ordered it I called Evenheat about the Rampmaster and was told there was no reason to get it, the setpro is all I need. Needless to say, I would also like to get a Rampmaster to replace the Setpro. I will email Evenheat and see what can be done.

I think the response from Evenheat was great. The issues were handle perfectly, I like to see that in a company. I feel much better about my purchase of the oven now than I did before I read there post.

Mike Kelly, you are good to stop by and here and take this 'heat'. It's nice to see a business step up and listen to tough comments. You've earned quite a bit of respect by posting a thoughtful and honest response here. I expect and hope your sales go up because of this. Have a good Thanksgiving....

PS let us know if you end up with a conversion kit from setpro to rm2

Mike,

I had the new good packing with mine, thanks. But it still arrived with the SetPro hanging off the body of the kiln because of missing screws. It also has two dents on either side at the far end. They are quite uniform and I am wondering if this is not part of the design? The interior chamber is not affected at all by the external dents.

Thanks,

John Frankl

I just got my rampmaster frome Mike at Evenheat and I am extremly pleased. Evenheats customer service is the best i have ever had to deal with.

I wouldnt hesitate to get another oven from them, in fact, I can see another oven in the near future.

Thanks Mike

Thanks, Michael, for reminding me with your post that I said I'd do a follow up!

I received a call on the Monday following Thanksgiving from Mike Kelly. Very prompt!! He was very cordial and pleasant. The Rampmaster II control panel has a "list price" over $300. He offered it to me at distributor cost of $192 +s/h and said he would extend that same price for a reasonable period to anyone else who would have preferred the Rampmaster but couldn't get it. I told him I would mention that pricing in this review and he was ok with that. I also understood that this price was for the control panel only, and I would have to fit it to the existing panel/case.

I received the control panel on that Thursday. Installation was a bit of a PITA but not terrible. I have a slightly older control box design that I think is a bit smaller than the current picture on the website. It required that I move the power switch, also. Since the case is popriveted together, I elected to simply remove the entire box off the unit and work without total disassembly and grinding off all those rivets. With a 4" air-powered cutoff wheel I cut out a hole to fit the new control. A drill bit and jewelers saw and 15 minutes of work had the switch repositioned. The only real screw up was when I cut through a wire with the wheel. God Blessed me in my stoopidity and left enough wire that all I had to do was attach a new connector. :o A little over an hour after I opened the box I had the new contol panel installed and operating.

The new control uses the same sequence as the programming on the SetPro. You still have to select User preset, then Segments and Rate1, Temp1, Hold1, etc, in order,so in that respect it isn't any grand change. However, I still must say I prefer pushing the number buttons instead of holding a scroll key down. Part of the front panel is dedicated to "cone fire" stuff for ceramics firing, so is of little use to knifemakers. One thing i haven't figured out yet is if there's a way to just turn it on, select a temp, and have it "heat&hold" without having to set a full program. In that respect, the simplicity of having a single-dial analog control on my Paragon is still a benefit, such as when Nanc wants to anneal glass beads or one simply wants to heat up a piece of plain carbon steel.

Would I recommend someone to run out and make this upgrade? Not necessarily. I say that simply because for many, this definitely wouldn't be considered $200 worth of improvement. I am personally happy, however, that I made the switch, because I truly detest "scrolling arrows" versus keypad entry. After using it for a few days, I would definitely recommend paying the $100 upgrade fee if purchasing a new furnace. It just seems friendlier for some reason.

Many thanks to Mike Kelly for being so personable and accommodating.

Cool
Thanks Mike Kelly for coming on..I'm so glad for this post..and Mike F for the thread.
I've had the Rampmaster II before the set pro was thought of I think.
I had mine custom made at 27" inside.

these I believe were mainly for potters with cone this and cone that so
for a dummy like me I just had to figure it out my self.

the shipping was great not a dent or flaw in it.
the door does droop a little but I can fix that without a lot of problem..

the only problem I have is once it hit target heat it will cause and error and shut down,
man this the first few times sucked  not knowing it was cooling instead of soaking:rolleyes: the fix has been for me to just watch it and reset the program I'm in , it takes but a sec,and it keep on going ok after that
but still I'll like to see it run itself
once I set it the first time.. :(

I called Evenheat and they want the code it gives?
I don't use it a lot right now so I'm waiting to fire it up again and re-call them and see what happens.

I do think the directions should be made for the knife maker if it's going to a knife maker for use,

but I think I have it now,, after how long? :D
I'm told the problem is a chip but not by Evenheat,, so I'm not sure..

..I've been putting up with the problem for about 5 years I think so maybe now I can get it fixed....the lady at Evanheat was good as she could be to me I suspect , I just need to get it fired up.

I don't recall a code number just an error message saying error , but some of you guy know my memory:rolleyes: :)
I'm not sure if she asked if I had the Rampmaster II or not? anyway I'll do some more calling :)

I purchased mine thru Koval last year with the setpro, had trouble progaming it. I set down with the instructions and called and talk to the guy that made it and he help me understand it. My problem was the ramp speed. It did have one issuse on the door were a screw had chip out a piece of the door but its not close to the heat. This is my first oven so i don't know nothing about the rampmaster.

If I ever meet the guy that designed the key sequence in the Setpro for my Evenheat furnace, I think I may pop him one right in the beak. Why did it take me an hour to figure out my oven was ramping up at 2 degree's an hour??? Because he's an idiot, that's why...
