Hi all ,I purchased a coote from norm several months ago,but wasn't able to set it up till now due to recent military move to arkansas. Whats the best way to go about this?,i don't have a variable speed, just step pulleys. I'm not smart enough to be able to fabricate from directions, lol so a pic or plans from those who have cootes would be smokin useful! you have all been a big help so far and im impressed by everyones knives. thanks

Easiest and cheapest is to get 2 step pulleys. Mount the motor on a peice of MDF or 3/4" plywood and put a large hingeon it so you can raise it to move belt. Do a search on here and you should get some results.

hang it off the edge of the bench... don't run it so that you can get a piece of steel jammed between the wheel and the bench..... i know this cause it happened to me..... and it'll bend your shaft and put a ding in your rubber wheel....
-- the shaft was easy to replace... but i can't get another wheel.. ( they don't sell the wheels !!! :jerkit: )

but other than that.......its a good machine... and i still use it even though its got a bump

Kevin,
A couple of things to consider. Mount the motor so that it just clears the grinder arm to keep the pulleys close the machine. A longer belt will help reduce vibration. Don't use a high dollar lawn mower belt, get an automotive one (more flexible). Find or fabricate something to put under the motor to help get the tension right. If it is too loose it will bog down, if it is too tight it tends to vibrate. I just put a big piece of air hammer shaft (6 sided) under mine and move it until I like the vibration and tension. Check your mounting bolts frequently for tightness and use lockwashers or locknuts.

This is a nice machine once setup properly.

A couple of us here have the Coote. That's the GOOD news. Also, a few have offered to send you pix and instructions.........also good news. For me, I've tried it a couple of ways, and found out what works for me. I even have a spare motor mount I made that you may want. (for free, naturally).

The BAD news, is you have to ask, and send us an e-mail. Mine is easy. Just look:D

I love my Coote. I don't know if you have but you can get the pulleys and belt from Norm. I did when I bought my Coote from Norm. He is a great fellow to deal with. Rig your motor so that you can adjust tension on the belt, way loose to tight. If you are doing flat grinding or wish to taper tangs on the flat platen get a piece of pyrocerim (spelling?) for the flat platen. The pyrocerim will will flatten the surface and also raise platen surface far enough above the wheel below for tang tapering. You will like your Coote. Very good medium priced choice and well built. Be sure to use step pulleys if not using variable speed.
