Severe Knife Injury

While on duty this last weekend, I got a call to go to the local emergency room, that there was a knife injury coming in by private car. When the person was brought in, it was a custom knifemaker who was at another custom makers shop and was preparing for the Master Smith test. He swung at a piece of free hanging rope with the knife and after going through the rope the follow through of the swing went downward and to the left and planted the knife in the calf of his left leg. There was arterial bleeding and evidently severe tissue damage. The individual was transported to a larger hospital for surgery.

*just imagining the pain*
At least he knows that his blades are really damn sharp.
Perhaps now when test are being done, the tester are required to wear some kind of armor.....
Poor guy.....

Hey Walt, nice to have met you. Yeah, it was me. I'm now back at home, leg propped up, waiting it out. It was on the follow through on my rope cut and it went in right at the top of my calf angling down through to the outside and down. Jarrell and his sons were there and get the bleeding slowed and got me to a local hospital, where I later transferred to a Victoria hospital and a vascular surgeon. It ended up cutting a couple minor vessels in my leg coming right off the main artery and ended up cutting my calf approx. 1/2 in two. They sewed the vessels and muscle back up and closed with staples. I'm looking at 3 to 4 weeks with NO weight on my foot and several weeks to months for rehab. This is if nothing else a wakeup call. I've got 60 feet of cut up rope behind my shop with never even a HINT of anything like this ever happening. I'm convinced that, had I been by myself, I'd have bled to death. With some good first aid knowledge and quick action, they probably saved my life. Thanks go out to Jarrell, Jarrod, and Wesley for the quick action. Also want to thank all the medical, ambulance and police personnel. This could have been worse than it was.

I also want to thank all those that have called and emailed. Times like this remind me what a close-knit community we have here in the knife world. Thanks.

I hope you get better fast Jason and then get back and pass that MS test.

Welcome to BladeForums as well. Hope to see more of you here.

Glad to hear you're OK. I am sure many of us have had some serious wounds from our little toys. To me the worst part is always the initial realisation of "crap! This is really bad". After that it is just a trip to the ER. Always happens in front of witnesses too so there aren't any stories of how many Ninjas attacked and all I got was one little cut. Rest up:)

Jason, please get well. I'm really sorry to hear about your accident. I have always thought of this possibility when I have swung at free hanging rope....it makes me shudder.

Thanks for letting us know you'll be okay!
Nick

Amen. I'm on prayer lists all over the US right now. Thanks to all the prayers and emails and calls. With God and friends like this, I'm in great hands. Thanks.

Hope you get over it soon. Amazes me that I haven't really had more bad cuts considering how fumble thumbed I've gotten.

Glad to hear you are recovering well Jason....the thought of what happened causes me to shudder!

Gotta ask.........does the knife still shave after the cut?

Take care and get better!

Jason,

I am glad to hear that everything could be repaired and that you are on your way to recovery. Good luck and have a speedy recovery.
