Severe Knife Injury

I thought the test just called for you to cut the rope:D
Glad to here that you will be up and making knives soon,Hope all is well and you can get some reading done while you are recuperating...
I also agree with you about working by myself,I am always worried about getting hurt as I am the only one home all day and the neighbors are off at work also.Got phones everywhere in the shop just in case..
My prayers are with you and hope you heal soon..
(Are you thinking of how to grind while setting down yet:D )
Bruce

Jason, get well soon. If you need any books to read for a couple weeks let me know I'll find something to lend you.

That was some kinda cut - I haven't seen it spurt since I was a kid! You just gotta love knives. :D

Dave

yep! i am on a first name bases with the folks at the ER:D hope you have a speedy recovery.

I'm a real newcomer and got an introduction to how fast a belt sander can get you before you know it happened. Down to the bone I think it went and I didn't even try to cut myself. This stuff requires attention.

My thoughts and wishes are with you.

Roger

I respect knives more and more everytime I get dispatched to the Hospital for one of these type calls or an actual fight where a knife has been used.

Get well soon my thoughts are with you.

Jim

Yep, in fact, my knife went into my leg, back out about where it started, the whole while I was watching a clean 4" piece of rope flip its way to the ground...

Then I said, something's not quite right...

Saturday evening I went into surgery and Jarrell got on the phone Sunday AM OK'ing his finishing the test for me. The knife finished the Journeyman test and bent. My Journeyman knives are going to Atlanta without me for the rest of the test.

Glad to here you past the test...Good luck with the judging in Atlanta..
I passed my cut and bend test at Batsons this year also,But I am going to wait till next year to do the judging..I wasn't happy with the knives I had ready so I am going to re do them....
All my luck is with you..
Bruce

Glad to hear that you'll live, and best wishes for a speedy recovery too!

Now, if the knife passes and you keep it, you'll have a great story...hopefully someone took some gory pics...

But, if you decide to sell it, you can always call it 'First Blood, revisited'...lol

I'm glad to hear that you are doing alright. This is a real eye opener as I work in the shop by myself and reasures me of the importance of shop safety. In the spirit of finding the good in a bad situation, I hope your experience reminds all of us the importance of safety. Real glad to hear that your blade has passed. Best wishes and prayers.

I just thought about something..The things people will do to get there name in a magazine:p :D
I bet they do a great story on this after the show this weekend..
Hope you can get a smile out of this as I am just giving you a hard time..
Bet you are going crazy knowing your knives are on there way to Atlanta and you are at home and can't even work on a knife while you are there..Cheer up and have lots of knife making dreams while you recouperate..You will come back better for the ecperience...
Bruce

Jason: It is truly horrifying to hear a story like yours and thinking about what might have happened. I'm very glad to hear that you're going to heal up OK. I severly cut a finger a couple of years back, and, it is still unpleasant to think about it. However, the important thing is to remember that it all works out, in time.
You have a lot of people thinking good thoughts about you.
Work it hard when it is time for therapy, OK?
Best Regards,

RJ Martin

Jason, my friend---if only we, who care, could help by sharing your pain, we would be glad to do so! Sorry that you are unable to go to Atlanta and know that your blades will pass with flying colors. Sandy

Have you heard anything yet,Were dying to know if you passed. Not that that we don't have any confidence that you will.Just the nerves wondering if the judges agree with the rest of us..
Let us know when you find out..Please..
Bruce

Yikes.

I can just see the incident unfolding in my mind's eye...

Even with a modified swing with a machete (from high right crossing down to left away from my leg), I have had machete's glance off things and come back towards my foot or leg. It happens too quickly.

I am glad to hear you didn't suffer any nerve damage, and sheesh, that you didn't actually hit that main artery.

A speedy recovery would be nice, but here's to a FULL recovery, with no calf muscle problems post-therapy. Do go at the therapy full force... I'm sure you'll have scar tissue that you'll need to stretch back out, else lose some range of motion and potentially make that calf easier to strain or tear. (I had a good bit of therapy after reconstructive shoulder surgery last year... took a couple months of persistence to stretch out the tendons after just 3 weeks of inaction.) Therapy sessions are really just to teach you what to do and how to do it correctly ... you get to do the therapy with discipline on your own time, in my experience anyway.

Best wishes Jason...

Well, I'm now a Journeyman Smith in the ABS. I got the call this morning. I'm anxious to hear how many made it. I know it was the biggest group of potential Journeyman Smiths ever.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is great news..
I hope I can pass the judging next year..
Bruce

At least you didn't hit any vital organs.:)

But take it easy and move it now and then.
Makes threthpy a little easier.

Jason
Congratulations on the testing.
and a heart felt good and speedy recovery for you.
  I hope that's a horse you'll get back on
with no problems. Damn man be careful.
I do it with chain saws...been there..worst part is over just
do what the doc says and don't push it the out side heals faster than the inside..
:(
