For the sake of hopefully inspiring others with some ideas of their own, I'm showing my little sewing kit that I put together to keep in my EDC kit.

It all fits inside a film canister, and is pretty complete kit for it's size and weight.

It includes three bobbins: white upholstery thread, black upholstery thread, and dark green heavy duty upholstery thread. Also: two needles (one triangle pointed), two straight pins, four safety pins.

My apologies for the poor photos, I didn't really feel like getting out my light tent setup. :o

I wound the thread onto the bobbins quickly and easily using my sewing machine. I think nearly all sewing machines have a "bobbin loading" mode, where you simply attach the thread to the bobbin, press the foot pedal, and watch the bobbin wind itself. Really handy!

Whilst I don't have an EDC kit like that I do have a slightly beefed up version in my outdoor kit. It's got some heavier needles – big curved jobs, and a bit of bees wax, buttons and whatnot in it. Fits in a plastic tredder puncture repair kit. I keep a couple of patches from that original use in there with that too.

I wind using a sewing machine too. I guess because it's second nature it doesn't occur to me that others may not do that, or may not have a sewing machine. For them – remember you can wind by dropping the bobbin over a drill bit and holding it still with a bit of Blu Tack.

Very cool idea! I was without thread recently on a trail when a button came off my shorts not too long ago. It drove me nuts because I used to carry a sewing kit and ditched it. I'll have to set one up like yours - Good call!

One question - What is the advantage of having a triangle shaped tip on a needle?

That's a very cool idea Simon. I never even thought about having a kit like
that in my bag. I'm going to set something like that up.
I can see a lot of uses for a kit like that.
