It's that time again folks! The 2nd every-once-in-a-while SF/Bay Area Knife Knuts meeting has been scheduled for Saturday March 17 from 5:15 to 9:00 pm at the Round Table Pizza at 5160 Geary Blvd. at 16th Ave. in San Francisco. We have a completely private room reserved, so come join us and bring your knives!

If you are reading this you are invited! Please join us and meet your fellow forumites and knife knuts. If you have any knives to sell or trade bring those as well.

So far we're expecting Jim March, Steve Harvey, Dr. Walt Welch, Smoke, jchh (Jerome), Alfalfa, E__WOK, Joe Talmage, Ralf Hoenes, and myself (hope I didn't forget anybody). So add your name to the list and come talk knives with us.

That day is when St. Patrick's Day is celebrated. SF is going to be crowded with drunks, both on the street and driving. Count me out. Walt

I expect everyone to arrive sometime between 5:15 and 5:30, give or take. I'm not sure how the parking is over there. Smoke might know - I think he lives near there.

Yup...i missed it too...I forgot it was St. Patty's day, and had to work early to keep the city safe...d'oh!

The meeting was great! About 12 people showed up and it looked like a knife show in there! A few times, employees walked through the room and they looked a little worried. There could have been almost 100 knives in the room. Everyone was very nice, and glad to show off their knives. Dave brought a DDR Madd Maxx, man that thing is big. The blade was about Sifu length, with a shorter handle, but it was all so wide that the whole knife looked and felt enormous. Nice slick action, but not the most comfortable or secure handle, I actually prefer the Sifu. Jim March brought his Outsider. It's not as big as I'd thought, but that is one scary knife. Joe Talmage brought his large decorated Apogee, very slick. Joe also had a Sog Vision, with the Arc lock. I've been thinking about getting one of those, the lock looks good but if I got one I'd take the dremmel to that ugly hump on the back of the blade. And I've heard rumors of blade play developing with the lock, but not many. And Jerome had a Socom Elite, which did feel pretty good in my hand, and the microbar lock looked solid, but I still prefer my 710hs. There sere some Busses (LMS, 3, & modified BM), all extremely solid. I couldn't even think of a way to break one. And a Strider tanto FB - sharpened prybar. LCC DA, pretty nice knife, I'd feel comfortable carrying one and not worrying about getting busted. And the Gunting showed up. This was my first chance to see one in person. The handle on that thing is huge, I mean it's like a shoe! Both the handle and the blade are really wide, and the handle is way longer than the blade. It's a big, thick, heavy knife. The kinetic openings are fun (I was playing with the drone the most). There's no way I'd carry one though. It's just too big of a package for a 2 7/8" blade. And nifrand knows his stuff. He brought about 20 high end customs. A lot of trick action autos & DA's, scale releases, bolster releases, some that I coudn't figure out. He had 2 of Elisheiwitz's knives, every one of his knives I see I like better. If I could afford customs I think I would go to him as well. Also a lot of knives by Larry Chew, that guy can make knives as well. I mean, some of the nicest knives I've seen anywhere. Everyone in the room was drooling over nifrand's knives. So after playing with all of these very expensive knives he had on the table, I asked him what he carries, what was in his pocket? BM 940 & a scale release auto.

It was interesting to see different people's philosophies about knives. Jim March brought 2 knives, and wasn't interested in anything that wouldn't qualify as daily carry defensive cutlery. John Hollister (I think?)had about 25 2" pearl handled slip-joint folders. Hermes had a briefcase full of custom FB's, and lost among them was a Camillus Arc-Lite. I was there with mostly BM's, and there were a few people looking at them because they'd never seen an Axis lock before. Very interesting the different people you find into knives. Smoke had a few old Philipino swords & a balisong. Ban had a really nice D2 blade he made.

And lots, lots more. You guys should really try to make the next one. It was very impressive.

Don't forget the kamagong/ebony stick from Kris Cutlery I brought as well as a few books, trainers, and Spyderco Double stuff. As well as my deadly "autos" (you had to be there).

Other knives present, Emerson Mini CQC 7, Al Mar Auto Havana Clipper, Apogee, 420 Arclite (tightest sheath overall), MD Texas Hunter (?), Pro-Tech Runt, old style Sebenza, Pikuni or Talon (wide sheath), Spyderco Toad (very solid lockup), JSP Little Angel and Credit Card Cutter (with clip) and some gear, Ti and 154 La Griffe, Warren Thomas CF folder, Reeve Project I & II I think, a Ruana Skinner, many slipjoints and a 1" OA folder, 3 Spydercards, Mission MPF and MPK, Microtech Halo III, a Mike Snody Tanto, an Aitor Sawback, 2 Sifus (Sifu #1 and a D2), many Benchmades and CRKT, a TiKnives piece, Spyderco inlay Native, old Police, G-10 Harpy, copious amounts of D2 and Talonite. D2 was very nice slightly sharper than Talonite IMO.

Lightwise, a Streamlight Scorpion and the new Surefires with aluminum body and clip (reminds me of eggrolls), many variations of Photon Microlights.

I felt that the best cutters were the Apogee and Snody Tanto with the Strider, MD, and Battle Mistress next. The Emerson and Al Mar had a similar grind and were a little hard to cut with. I brought some blank business cards for the forumites to cut. I'm more of a slicer and Emerson and Al Mar didn't cut too well at less than a 45 deg angle. The Lean Mean Street was sweet but the sheath has got to go. I like the porous rough finish though. The modified Battle Mistress was light, screaming "backcut". My Basic #3 had a thick edge but could cut. Steve Harvey's comments about the Arc Lite's handle and sharpness were quite true. Strider built like a tank and the best cord wrapping I've seen, bar none.

J. March's "Outsider" impressive and much more subtle than on picture. Must be seen to be appreciated as well as Jim's knife draw.
SOG Vision, nice ergos, hated the clip. BM 710, I like it but not grippy enough for me, still like AFCK. Spyderco Harpy very usable, feels similar to G-10 Police but I hate ATS-55. CRKT-M16 I like the overall length.
Spyderco Toad should be called the Tadpole, my gosh that was small but solid lockup.
Spyderco G-10 Native with Inlay was much tighter than zytel, more secure. Microtech Halo 3, a rocket and Socom Elite, nice design but real light.

The Madd Maxx, shorter than I thought but light in the hand. Lighter to the touch and a little prettier than the Sifu. The Gunting Trainer got more attention than the knife, I spent about 10 or so minutes talking about opening a knife I don't own. lol

I was only disappointed that there was no Chinook, SERE 2000, Black Clouds, or SARK. So I consoled myself with a Spydercard. Man, the sharpest AUS 6 I've seen in a knife.
