Hi, I posted this in 2001...."Hi, I'm still looking for a source of Shaka hunting knives, handmade in Zimbabwe. I posted a message back in 1999 on the same subject, but, no replies.
Anybody got any ideas now?
Thanks."

Still looking, any ideas? Would be greatly appreciated. :positive:

Ritchie,

Google is your friend. ;)

A link from here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...hree-knives-from-Zimbabwe-and-a-mystery-maker

The post below, from another knife site was the first of several hits I got googling shaka knives zimbabwe,
was made by Gareth Bull.
A KnifeMaker here that is having trouble filling existing orders.

You were right to err on the production side The Shaka brand was made by a Zimbabwean company called Saw Sharpening Services in Mutare (Eastern Highlands), it's owner and knife designer was a family friend, the late John Weeks. John also made sole authorship knives and signed them differently, the sheaths on his knives were also beautifully tooled. They were still making knives in 2002 (last time I remember seeing them in stores) but I assume the brand will have stopped without John running it, I'll double check that though.

The Shaka knives were sold through high-end hotels (Troutbeck etc) and also stocked by Farradays (a Zimbabwean outdoor store) and fishing stores, or as corporate gifts through John. John would etch the company's name etc on the show side, thus why the logo is on the reverse.

More often than not the bolsters were like yours - brass, and the handles were generally Ebony or Rhodesian teak (John had a huge stockpile of old railway sleepers). Blade steel is high carbon and needs a little care - looks like this one's been well looked after. The sheaths were sometimes sewn along the edge but I've always preferred the leather lashed versions

I've never seen that particular pattern, I'll ask around and see if I can find it's name, John would do commissions - did a crazy one for me, so it may well be to someone's design.

As far as sourcing them, ebay might be your only recourse.
Best of luck.

Doug

I have a very similar Shaka Knife, cannot find any real information on them. Do you know what the value is of this Knive. Thanks
I am sure this has been done many times before but how about seeing your rare, unusual or one of a kind knife. That uncommon knife you just don’t come across too often…or ever.

Here’s a picture of my Shaka Bush Knife….

First of all, this thread is 4 years old. A new question with a link to the specific old post is one thing, but suckering members into reading an entire old thread is not polite.

More to the point, please read our rules. You need a paid membership to ask about values

The FAQ (our rules) at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/faq.php
Paid memberships at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/payments.php
Exchange section rules at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/announcement.php?f=699&a=98

SECTION 5 - Miscellaneous

In order to curtail potential abuse of membership privileges associated with the forums, questions regarding valuation of knives and collections are limited to those with a membership level which permits selling on this site. Accordingly, registered and basic members may not start or post in threads with such requests whether with the intent to sell or for informational purposes only. This rule applies throughout the site.

Oh, no, onojoe! I'm sorry I didn't clean this up sooner. :D

davezn resurrected 2 oldies, neither of them too long. The Shaka is a beautiful old knife.

1) You can post your pic here if you put it on a photo hosting site like photobucket.
2) Are you offering to sell it?

I just wanted to contribute to the discussion as i am also a collector and a fan of Shaka knives. I had the occasion to see many of them in Zimbabwe and I hope that on my next trip I might still be able to ferret out one or two. How do I post the picture here?

Upload the to a photo sharing site like Photobucket, when you have there will be some
code on the photo sharing site page you can copy, paste that code into a post here, and the photo will be included in your post.
