Does anyone have a sketch, or picture, of the shape they forge their steel to before forging in the bevels on a nesmuk? Or, if you cut a preform shape before forging, that works too. Mine keep coming out pointier than I would like.
Hmm... This moved off the first page nary a comment. Let's bump it up, eh...
I forged another tonight. I guess I need to keep experimenting. I only recently began to toy with nesmuks. I'm so partial to nice pointy blades, though. Maybe they'll grow on me.
This is roughly the angles and cuts I used to make the knife in the last pic. Actually, I think the bottom cut was even a touch more vertical.
The little 'flat' at the tip was actually there on the steel all while forging, I think it helped with the shape as it allowed the more blunt point that I wanted and allowed me to grind out the shape I wanted.
I do just a minor cut at the top for a nessie, and try to work a good distal in. I'm not a fantastic smith by any stretch, but I have started out working as much as possible for my skill level cutting as little as possible and working the steel in with the hammer. I usually end up a bit shoppy on the upper profile, but it smooths out easily with a file or belt grinder.
