Shaping Kirinite

So here is my first Kirinite handle. It was easy to cut, drill, and cut to profile. Now though, I need to shape it which will involve a belt sander on that beautliful polished surface. Not being sure how that would turn out and how I would get the unavoidable scratches out, I played around with a scrap of kirinite, taking it from 150, to 600 and then 800 grit and then buffed it with white compound. On the scrap I did not hand sand but I certainly could on the real handle. Is this a reasonable procedure? Is there a better way? This stuff is expensive enough that I do not want to blow the whole thing. Thanks!

Go slow on the belt sander. This stuff "melts" when it gets hot. It sands very easy by hand. I do my rough shaping on the belt at slow speed and then all the rest by hand. I've been taking them to 1200 grit and then buffing

Agreed. It's very soft. The couple times I used it I only took it to about 600 and it looked really bright.
