Here's a picture of my second grinder. I actually bought it off of BF from a maker in New York, can't remember his name but he made a lot of awesome kerambits. I still use it for stuff, use the other side to buff scales and things. Think I paid $5 for the Chinese bench grinder.

Here are my grinders Will. At this point, my equipment greatly exceeds my skill and experience.
The thought was, if I am going to learn to grind, why not learn on the proper equipment. :)

Nooooooooooo, you're supposed to start on crappy gear so you appreciate what it's like when you get a "real" grinder :(

You're all making me cry.

Heres my old KMG. Notice the old platen...ive since put a handle on the tension arm. Wow what a blast from the past. THis was when my shop was a spare bedroom in my apartment and my bench was an old desk!

Don't cry Will, here is my Newbie grinder, Please excuse the mess I just finished sanding a couple of handles. I have seen the otherside of the grinder world and I hope this little guy can help me learn enough to one day sell a knife or two and get me a real mans grinder.

I made my first ones with a hacksaw and files... Then dad let me use his AWESOME 1/6 hp 4" bench grinder ;). Then bought an 8" bench grinder at a tool auction for roughing work and buffing wheels.

Then I ponied up and bought a brand new Burr King variable 960 the week I graduated from high school. I was thinking like Cliff. I figured if I really wanted to make a go of this stuff, I wanted a good machine. Burr King was without a doubt, the Cadillac of grinders at the time, and I wanted one! :D Edited to add... keep in mind I'd been tinkering with this stuff and minimal tools from 12-18. :)

I got my new KMG painted just like the other one, but I'm trying to figure out if they'll all fit on the old bench or if I have to revamp it. Once, I decide, I'll try to snap a photo :)

Will... where's that BK!?!?! :D

Just noticed...do the new KMG grinders no longer come with the sticker that says "KMG-1 Knifemakers Grinder?"

I did all my knives on that grinder before the KMG, so you can certainly fund a KMG off knives from it as I did. I still use that grinder for roughing out handles...

The crappy ole grinder I started this thread with, paid for this BK, I installed a 1 hp VS... I know bigger is better but it's what I had money for and it works for me, of course I'm saving for a 2hp VS and make myself a KMG clone. The other pic shows my lighting set up. It's a double halogen work lamp $20 on sale at HF mounted on a bracket above the grinder. You WILL wear a hat when grinding :p I bought the grinder off of eBay around 2003 or so from a guy in NY who inherited it from a maker (his brother in law) up there that died and didn't have any other family.

Here's the BK:

Well I'm just glad I'm not a KMG copy cat like all of y'all.... :p

I do want one though... and when I get it I'm turning my 1hp vs into a 9" reversible disk!

That's inspiring. I am planning on going this route. I figure that if I take my time and do quality work on a "lesser" grinder that I will just be able to increase my production once I can hook up a pro-level machine.

Keep the pics coming guys. I love this stuff!

Very few makers start out with good grinders.. heck most makers start out with horrible grinders and we all come out of it with weird habits and wonder why we can't teach people to do it the way we do and why does that guy grind like that and why's he looking at me funny when I grind.... :(

The thing on the left is a tree with all my wheels in it. then left to right
Bader B3 variable, Square wheel laying on its side, Another Square Wheel
from the mid 70's. A variable 1/2 horse with a cone-loc drum sander on it,
you kind of get the idea. Ken.

Here are two of my grinding/sanding devices. The Griz and scrappy. Note the pics are cropped to hide as much mess as posible. Scrappy is an ongoing adventure in redneck engineering. Mainly it was built so I could run a small wheel. I am thinking it may be a good idea to start squirling away some money to buy a KMG.( I have been trying) Every time the wife finds out I have some cash she says we need to pay some bills. :grumpy:I guess though she is right, after all if the power is off how am I going to grind?
