Share pictures of your Grinder

Ole Scrappy looks like it kinda "grew" out of metal shavings and files. I like it.... how dangerous is it to run? :p

Green Machine.. The grinder my 14yr old son and I built for him...

Pics of my KMG clone. Also shows the unorthodox tracking mechanism. Side to side as opposed to up and down. Had never seen how easy a KMG tracking system worked before figuring out this one... :)

Here are my grinders Will. At this point, my equipment greatly exceeds my skill and experience.
The thought was, if I am going to learn to grind, why not learn on the proper equipment. :)

Something is VERY wrong with those grinders... Oh yea, WHY DO THEY LOOK SO CLEAN??? I could almost eat off those worktables...:D

It pretty much did grow out of metal shavings and files. As for dangerous its not really that bad. Not enough hp to do much damage:) but that can be fixed. :D It has step pulleys and the motor is mounted below it, so unlike the griz I can make it run slow. I also built a platen with two 2" wheels for it thats not in the picture.

I have been messing with scrappy for a while now. I still use the Grizz for hogging and such but damn its so nice to have a small wheel and slow speed.

You dont want to know the silly things I have done to try and get that nice curve in the bolster blade transition on integrals.

you guys make me sad.

The good news was my dad came out and looked at me, and looked at the wobbly table with me desperately trying to draw file on it and concluded its time to build a new work bench. Now i just have to convince him to help me build one with a drive shaft running under it so i can build tools onto toe bench of it, and connect them all to a single motor.

Here is what I made this May. It is crappy I know, but it works pretty good. Cost me about 300 $ maybe 400. It needs some tweaking, a rest at platen and disc grinder, a 10" wheel etc....

Hmm, a bunch of knife makers sharing pictures of their favorite grinder. Not the wife, girlfriend, grandkid, dog, cat, or goldfish. Kind of reminds me of the old joke where a guy advertises for a woman in the paper, but must come with boat. Send picture of boat.

Happy holidays guys!

My shop grinder on a mobile stand with locking casters. I use a 1-1/2hp motor with step pulleys.

David, that's a very early KMG. What it's story? where did it come from? how long have you had it? Does it have a serial number on the rear vertical riser that the tool arm receiver bolts too? I think it orginally came with a 5/8 drive shaft..was it changed. Anyway...It's very cool!! Thanks for posting photos of it.

Nooooooooooo, you're supposed to start on crappy gear so you appreciate what it's like when you get a "real" grinder :(

You're all making me cry.

thats ok it looks like they just bought it for looks.
no blade dust on the wall bench top or on the belt.
mine you could make a knife off of the dust on the wall
its on there like someone shot it on the wall

The photo of the little 1x30 delta, and the bench grinder next to my cheapie drill is what I used to make knives that eventually paid for the KMG in the second photo.

oh....and no comments about how clean the shop is....I had just got done cleaning it for shop tour photos for my website. Which I still need to get those photos on my website.

Here's some pics of my setup.

It's in transition right now, as I just the KMG, finally mounted the LeBlanc on a pedestal today, and have a dust collector coming next week.

I also just put lights on everything.

I gotta decide how I want it all, and then fix the power situation.

1st pic is an overall. (How about those abrasive belts in the back? 36x72" I think...)

Then the LeBlanc with an attachment I made allowing acute angles to be ground.

Harcore

KMG & Fingereater.

Hardcore disk sander.

Damn, I am in the middle of selecting a grinder. My mentor/tutor/hunting buddy says I can't use his equipment much longer (not that I use it much...lack of time to drive 40 min each way), and that I should have my own anyway.
So...I have now started my looking. That stuff is not cheap, and I still haven't figured out what I need!!! I, too, want a KMG and figure I ought to learn on the right stuff. I don't want to highjack the thread, but I see a great variety and experience here that I want to take advantage of. How much should I plan to spend to get started?

If you want to build the NWGS, you'll get a great machine that you built yourself. Just purchase the plans on the for sale threads. You can get everything for under $1000. Also, just because it is "no weld" plans, doesn't mean that you can't weld it. It can still be welded up.

If you want to buy a new KMG, I'm thinking you're looking at anywhere from $1500 to $2000 for new.

I bought mine used and saved a little on it ($1400 for about $1750 worth of machine if purchased new), but the competition for used machines is heavy. I didn't get one until my fourth attempt at buying one used. When a used one goes up for sale, they don't last long at all.

I WIN!! for having the crapiest grinder in these forums:D It's a Kalamazoo 2x72with a 1HP motor! I also have a 4x36 and 1x30 that are in even worse condition than this one:o
