When Swaggs first went to SMKW, they released a limited number of these in conjunction with her first appearance for the store. I was lucky to grab one.

I've had a couple of button locks over the years, a custom from a maker here and a Hogue. I let those go a while back, and just now have started to get back into them.
I recently got a Kizer Swayback, and I must say I like it a lot because it doesn't have any thumbstuds.

What other non-auto button locks are out there that don't use thumbstuds? I would ideally like a thumbhole instead of thumbstuds, flippers are ok.

gooeytek gooeytek , Sounds like you'd like the Spyderco Smock. I have one and absolutely love it. Non-auto button lock (I think Spyderco calls it their button compression lock), has thumbhole and small but effective flipper.

I'm sorry you got a lemon. This doesn't match my experience with Kizer knives, and I've been through dozens of them. I beat up Kizer all the time for weak detents, but never the lock-up. This hasn’t been my experience with a factory fresh model at all. Given that this is a used knife and it doesn't support the experience of many reviewers, have you considered that this may be an outlier? How can you be so certain this used knife wasn't abused in some way? I may have to look again, but I'm not sure there's a way for the lock to sit on the ramp, it can drop behind the tang or not. That's kinda the way button locks are designed.

Could you share some pictures of the "crap" grind and lockup you're seeing?

Again, I'll be happy to test mine with a spine whack and post videos, but I'm on week 8 of 8 weeks on the road and don't have access to all my knives.
I too would like to see disassembly pics and maybe vid of failure. I thknk it would be of value to this board, and for me, i have been thinking of ordering an Original since i have enjoyed the Civivi Altus so much.

Oh yea, I'm familiar with the Smock, I just don't like the way it looks 😬

I’ve spine whacked my Original with no trace of failure. I can see how if the blade wasn’t fully opened to engage the lock, with only the friction of the plunger holding it “open”, the lock could “fail” but at that point it’s obvious the knife isn’t 180 degrees. This would really be operator error. It’s an operator error that can happen with almost any kind of lock.

Based on the claims of a non-existent sales thread (I looked) and the lack of “internet reports” of failure along with an unwillingness to support claims, we can write this off as a case of low quality trolling.

I’ll post some pics soon.

Ok, that is reassuring. This thread had really given me pause on seeking out other button locks, and i then got sidetracked by a deka warmie in magnacut, but will have to get back to buttons as they are a favorite, especially if combo with thumb stud.

Here is the sale thread. My impression is he is a very honest individual since this does not help sell his items. The deal looks alright if you want to make the Original a wall hanger. Help yourself if you want.

Here is the one I brought. Great seller fast delivery. He sold this to me in good faith and there is no way he could know this had a defect like this without spine tapping, something all of us hate to do but perhaps should do a little of every now and then. I am not going to seek a refund I blame the company for this.

I do not want to bother to make a video of how easily this Kizer Original failed but I just may if you keep spurting out your version of what you think you know.
Perhaps I should have just spent the extra money for something better.

I have had it up to here with defective locks both local and imported. I love button locks, I don't love defective button locks.

Now for something more pleasant.

These are 2 good manually operated (flipper) button lock folders made by Hogue that did not close when spine tapped. They look better, feel better in the hand, and are certainly made better. They also have a safety slide switch that locks the button in the blade open position only. They are also locally made. If you want a good button lock I doubt you can go wrong with one of these or any of the other button lock models made by Hogue.

I hope you like the picture.IMG_0011(1).JPG
