Share Your Beater Knives!

I know there’s not a lot of love for the brand around here, but if there’s a high likelihood of abuse, loss, or breakage, my historical default has been my SOG Flash II or Zoom-mini. If you can tolerate a bit of blade play, they’re both great knives and AUS8 is crazy easy to sharpen.

My PM2 S110V is my hard user when I need a bit more knife. I was only lukewarm to the PM2 initially, but the harder I use it, the more I like it.

In spite of it’s shortcomings, the Massdrop Crux has rarely left my pocket for nearly two months. I think because it’s a bit rough around the corners I’m willing to use it indiscriminately, and sometimes stupidly. It’s my up & coming beater.

I bought a Guardian 3 a year ago for the express purpose of beating. Unfortunately, due to stupid laws that prevent concealing a fixed blade, I haven’t been able to put it through it’s paces. (I’m an untucked shirt kinda guy.)

SOG knives are on pricey side for what you get but I like this Trident that I got from a trade (The guy who owned it didnt treat it right , still better that the Winchester framelock that he wanted so badly from me :D )

Some pics of the manix after helping work out in the shop today! Got used to scrap up a bunch of epoxy and wedge apart the handles to that friction folder enough to get a Flathead in there to pry them apart the rest of the way. Im thinking she will get a bath tomorrow if I can find the time.

48DE14E9-493F-4FF1-AFD2-654235198106.jpeg I used to work in a job where I constantly had to cut boxes, thus the box cutter. Nowadays I only have to break down boxes from my purchases. So I... I end up cutting up just as... as many boxes... I really need help... I’m so ashamed.

I use the Spyderco for food prep and cutting when not home.

I never claimed to be a smart man ;) I think I just like to see how far I can push things just a little bit too much. I do need to get me a good carpet knife though!
Ignore those who don't know what their knives are capable of.

I need to put every knife I own in a pile and take a picture for threads like this.

After I started getting more into building things and making knives I decided It would be my designated beater or "work" knife after previously using my delica. I still love the delica but I knew it was not quite sturdy enough for the harder cutting tasks I was using it for without damaging it. I paid $130 for the knife 3 years ago and after all the use I have put it through I can now say that it was well worth the money. I still have not found the limits to the knife, with the only drawback being that I do not like the steel, or at least spydercos version of it. I would like it better in 154cm or cpm154. I would also Like to see another point of positive location such as another screw in the rear of the knife to make it more rigid for cuts under torsion. Im thinking when and if I wear this one out I will buy a para 3 or para 2 for this reason. I will say that the ball bearing lock is without a doubt a very strong lock, I have wedged the blade in between two slabs of micarta that I had pinned together while sanding and pounded it in a spine whack motion on my table to wedge them apart. No lock failure and no blade play. (some side to side but I did not have the pivot tight and did not use any locktight after a full disassembly.) I do not even consider this a reasonable test at all, I just did It because I had already gotten my moneys worth from the knife and wanted to see what would happen haha.
I also want to mention that even after not cleaning the knife at all for several months, and it being with me more often than not in a dirty shop with metal dust and saw dust getting in the pivot (and the pivot being completely dry), the blade still drops free with only a slight side to side play when you really force it.

I can never bring myself to use a box cutter. I only use them to cut leather or when I need to cut out exact outline in paper. Even when I worked at walmart I would constantly get in trouble for no using my box cutter haha
I know I need to invest In a good stanly one or something though because Im tired of using a flimsy throw away that came with a tool kit I got for Christmas.

I just acquired and would suggest Gerber EAB Lite, or as Nick Shabazz calls it “eablite.” It is a neat and compact folding box cutting razor.

Since I am not using them to shave, I am starting to consider using one of my cheaper Dovo straight razors to cut boxes in style.

For pocket carry, do not mind using, a Buck Chinese bone handled 3 blade stockman from Wally World. Keeps ok edge but not heartbroken if damaged. You did say beater knives.

I only use box cutters for drywall. When I finished my basement, I was cutting a lot of drywall and Sheetrock against a concrete floor. I didn’t want to wreck my knives. Other than that, I use knives. Knives cut boxes better than box cutters IMO.

I can understand not wanting to cut drywall haha There is no way I would attempt that with any of my knives.

The Buck Vantage. I usually prefer a flat ground blade but bc it was 420HC i wanted a thinner geometry. I carried this for a couple years before i got something i really like but I still carry it for work. I do TV repair so the blade isnt seeing heavy action besides zip ties, co-ax cable and the occasional piece of customer-damaged plastic from a tv's bezel... but mostly it is carboard and stripping wires. I also honed it more than i used it(honing is meditative right?) so that it has no belly and gas almost lost it's concave grind. Like a ridiculous dagger. Still takes a razor edge being Buck's 420hc, though edge retention is predictable

Those look like they’ve seen some good, honest use. Your electrician reminds me of my own. The flathead/wire stripper is usually my go-to pry bar.

Im slowly growing collection of those electrician knives... I think I bought my 3rd and 4th one this last week lol
