ELDE, that one's really cool! What mechanism does it use to hold the blade open? Is it 'cran forcé' like the Laguioles, or is that a pick-lock?

puukkoman ,

It's a (very strong) cran forcé - very old stag scales

That knife was made to be used !

Below is a Calmels made Laguiole made before WWII

length is 13 cm closed - that is quite rare ; most Laguiole for "grown men" are 12 cm closed !!!!!

Thanks for the info, and thanks for sharing!

IS there a company out there that produces Laguiole look-alikes, or knives with similar properties? The reason I'm asking is that I was at ye olde' flea mall a little while ago, and saw something that looked very much like a smallish Laguiole, but because of where it was in the case, I couldn't see the pins in the handle, or any markings. It had the light wood handles and corkscrew, and file work on the back spring too I believe. I passed, I didn't have the $17 in my pocket for it, and I'm not secure enough in my identification skills to know whether or not it was legit or a fake.

ELDE that's an astonishingly fine knife Monsieur!

Beautiful proportions all over. What is that tool on the inside, opposite the corkscrew?

Thanks, Will

It is a lovely knife, the decorative pins are a nice feature, as is the file work and widened area where the T is. Also the contour of the bolster and how the plunge line on the blade is angled to match the angle of the bolster, really compliments it.

Thank you Will,

The tool is an awl ('punch') / - there is an awl on the above Yssingeaux too (see post # 99) most of the farmer knives had one then .

Gary, I use my Compagnon as an outdoor food/picnic knife, it really slices everything thin!

My Compagnon is also Ebony but without the pin work, the compact Ebony I use a lot does have the decorative pins though. I'm just wondering what Le Trappeur is like, must be massive......

Beautiful pictures. I`ve been with great interest following stschmalhauses french knife reviews and been lusting after a Laguiole for quite some time now. I`m planning a trip to france next weekend and want to pick one up.

There are many low-quality Laguiole style knives produced in Far-flung non-French places. When I got my first Fontenille Pataud, I simultaneously purchased a $15 Pakistani version just to compare and contrast. No comparison.

That is a beautiful Laquiole! I bought a 13cm Laquiole En Aubrac knife when I was in St-Emilion last summer. We are heading back for a couple more weeks this August and my intention is to buy a couple more, but I really want to hunt around and see if I can find some sweet vintage pieces as well...

10cm snakewood Laguiole en Aubrac, a gift from my wife. A thank you to Pete for the helpful education. A lovely knife that I will always cherish and use.

Agreed, that is a beauty!
I'm being pretty good and held off getting that style, but, I am weakening and those nice photos do not help ;)
