Sharing picture of your work or Am I vain?

I realized that when I finish a knife I can't wait to post pictures of it on here to share with you guys.
Of course the main reason I do is to get feedback to help me see what I need to work on. I mean some of the flaws I can see of course but for others, a more experienced eye like you guys have is needed.

I must admit though that it is always nice to read the positive comments.

I don't think so at all. To me it is all part of the fun.

The feedback is very important to me, even if it is negative I am pleased to get it.

When people like what you make you know you are on the right track. :D

I think we all look forward to the feedback, wether it be good or not as constructive. I always look forward to hearing comments, knowing your on the right track is always nice.

I figure we are all vain, at least to some degree.

I feel the same way, Patrice. I like sharing pictures and getting comments... even when the comments are glowing. Helping me refine my work is beneficial... bloating my ego perhaps just a smidge less helpful, but more enjoyable. ;)

You're so vain, you probably think this post is about you! :D

Patrice, I've wondered the same thing- I mean, not about you, about me. I think that some of the aspects of human nature that are considered distasteful or self serving are also completely impossible to escape. As with vice, I think that "all things in moderation" may be the key. There's a reason for pride in one's work, I think it would have to be in excess to be described as vanity. You can take pride in your work and should- I think you often come off as quite humble and you have some extra room for pride before straying into the realm of vanity.

I was raised to consider pride as sin, as in "pride goeth before a fall." I understand the thinking behind this, but don't agree. You gotta pat yourself on the back sometimes, or let other people know that you're proud of them.

PRIDE
Pride is the easy part; at its worst it just means building yourself up and acting cocky. It can be very dangerous, but it's also necessary. Let's face it, having the guts to put your work in front of the world takes some attitude.

HUMILITY
Being humble is perhaps the most basic, and most difficult of all. It's easy to let your ego blind you... but it's far more rewarding to keep an open mind to constructive criticism, guidance from others, and your own conscience.

DEDICATION
This is the blend of Pride and Humility... where the desire to be the best, meets the willingness to learn from the best... and all the rest.

Hey, I like that. Makes sense to me.

Not only will excessive pride impede your progress, but no one likes an arrogant bastard. Unless it's the beer we're talking about.

Naaa, guys, vanity doesn't have to do anything with it. I look at it this way: what you guys are doing, is craftsmanship combined with art. Art is supposed to be seen. Don't you guys dare even thinking about posting less pictures! A noob like me can learn so much with every pic, left alone the WIP's.
I guess it's a guy thing, but I could spend hours looking at naked women, shiny motorcycles and sharp knives. But that's just me...

Im the same way, but I think I'm on everyone's ignore list. cause i never get hardly any feedback at all but a ton of views so i've taken the view that no news is good news from that :) ( or am I really that annoying? lol :eek::foot::D)

No news is good news?

I hardly ever attaboy, so unless I see something specific to comment on, i look at many posts without commenting

I love show and tell, it's how I learned to look at a blade and how to make it better.

lol yea I look at many w/o commenting too. but if someone is putting up their knife, they bled, sweat, and cried on,... I feel it takes courage to show it to seasoned makers. So to respect that courage, If I like it, I tell them so, but if not I'll tell them so and why... because that's one of the ways we grow as makers is by feedback, good and bad. so if I don't hear anything about it I must be doing it right :D (yea right I know better, but let me have my delusion :D ) but anyway I don't mean to hijak Pat's thread.

I hope not because I feel the same way, I think it is the feeling of your peers appreceation for what we do.

I'm always eager to show off my work. There's undoubtedly some vanity there, we all have some, but I really want/need feedback. Honest critiques are one of the best ways to learn and grow in our craft.

Like others, I look more than I post and tend not too be overly critical unless it's clearly asked for. There are too many times that I look at a knife I like and don't post a comment because it would just amount to "me too".

And thanks to James I can't get that damn song outa my head:rolleyes::D

I rarely post photos unless they are in reply to something. Nothing wrong with whatever you choose to do.

Good one:thumbup::D

Vanity is part of the human experience; many are vain about there physical appearance, some about the car they drive; neither is worthy.

To feel vainity upon completion of a great knife; now that I understand.:)

I don't post pictures because I still have to learn how to do it, but Patrice I believe I would just as you have if I knew how. Frank
