Hey guys, when I finally decided to go, I had to tell you guys about it.

I've been invited to go on a 3 day shark fishing tournament with my friend and his fishing group. They won the year before last, and they are prepared to take home the gold this year (and by gold I mean the cash prize which we split :D).

Knife of choice: Spyderco Pacific Salt Plain edge yellow handle.

I wanted to keep my Dejavoo with me for the 60 day challenge, but didn't want to risk ruining a brand new knife to the elements when I have a rust proof knife I could take.

I leave tomorrow night and will be taking a lot of camping equipment. We will be staying in a remote beach location on the National Seashore just south of Corpus Christi and Mustang Island. Where we will be staying is "Top Secret" and a 4X4 has to be used to reach the "Top Secret" fishing spot.

Any tips on what I should take? I've only been fishing for 1 day at a time, and 3 days of sandy buttcrack isn't my idea of an ideal campout, but hey, beggers can't be choosers :o. I'm sure lots of sunblock and a good hat will be needed. If there is anything else, please let me know.

I'll make a new thread on Sunday night with pics of how the trip went. Talk to you guys soon, J.

All I can say is TAKE ME!:D:D
Just win the dang thing and take lots of pics.

two words

spyderco aquasalt.

Doing a TK article on it. Amazing knife.

What's the target species? Makos? If you have never hooked in to a big mako you are in for a real treat. I have looked up, from the back of the boat, at 8-10 footers that were airborn. There is nothing like it. They are so fast and strong. Most fish really dont compare. Good luck and please post some pictures.

Matt

Wish I knew how to keep those pesky Sand flies away. Thats my biggest ailment when on the beach.

I wish I could do that, you have my envy. Take lots of pics, and good luck!

The one thing I can tell you from camping on the beach; is that you want a tent without netting. It goes against most tent construction/design; but when the wind blows and the sand gets into everything you'll appreciate the tip. Pitch below the dunes, but above the high water 'debris line' to keep from getting flooded out.

A few things that come to mind:

  • Sunscreen (I prefer cool, lightweight long-sleeve shirts too)
  • Dramamine (sea sickness sucks)
  • Bugspray with Deet (sand gnats and mosquitos can be brutal)
  • A good hat
  • Sunglasses, preferably polarized, a neck lanyard is a plus
  • A decent fillet/utility knife - that Salt should work fine
  • A pair of needle-nosed pliers with cutters, a belt sheath is a plus (each evening, a freshwater rinse and a spraydown of WD-40 will keep the salt water from seizing/corroding them)
  • A small towel/rag to keep on your belt - nice for wiping hands and gear
  • A decent first aid kit (be sure to pack some headache medicine)
  • Wetwipes have tons of uses - including a quick "bath"
  • Flipflops or Crocs for the beach - Tennis shoes will quickly fill with sand
  • Headlamp is always good at a campsite - especially a remote one (extra batteries a plus)
  • Don't forget toilet paper!
  • Large ziplocks for any fillets you might keep (and a cooler with some ice of course) - may not be a consideration for tournament fishing

Thought of something else.

A disposable camera (with flash) might be a good thing. You don't have to worry about your expensive digital and the sand & salt air.

But there might be an image you want to capture...

What they didn't tell you is that you are the guy on the paddles the surfboard, that brings the bloody tuna head out for the shark to eat.
:D

Bring plenty of water and a change of shorts.
:D

What kind of firearms are you bringing? Shark fishing is really just an excuse to bring guns with you on the high seas. Have fun! Every time I've had an opportunity to go shark fishing something has come up that kept me on shore.

I will be the bait guy :grumpy:, I'll be catching the "small" fish so that they can bait it and take the line out via kayak. We're staying on the beach, and they use kayaks to take the bait out about a mile or so (tons of line) and we just wait around. They have one of those "jaws" fishing chairs with the belt attachment on the back of a truck. When a shark hits, they follow it parallel to the beach until it tires out and is brought in.

Thanks for the tips of stuff to bring too, I keep feeling like I'm forgetting something :o.

The toilet paper is something I didn't even think of. This is my chance to have a reason to buy a folding shovel :D.

I wish I brought firearms. Our boat was pretty small. I remember one time where I took a leatherman and stabbed it through a lemon shark's head, pliers first. took a few tries.

That spyderco aquasalt is an amazing knife. The limits do not stop where the water starts, it is a wonderful bushcraft camp kknife as well. the cheapest I've seen it is at knifeworks.com

"Looks like we're going to need a bigger boat."

Now that's hardcore! IS there anything a Leatherman can't do?

Bato - that shark fishing scheme sounds fun. Make sure you invite Joezilla - sounds like he's the type of guy you need in those kayaks!

Mmmm shark fishing... screw the knife get a speargun! :D Nah... you will need a knife even if it is only for dicing the lure and cutting line. Any of the mentioned ones will work like a champ. Don't forget to keep us posted and take a lot of pictures!

:eek:Are you kidding? Whatever you do, if you catch something, get it out of the water ASAP, finish it off with a whack on the head and by no means let a drop of blood touch the water. If you are shark fishing is because THERE ARE SHARKS ARROUND so try not to look too tasty for them. The sound of the paddles in the water and the outline of a kayak from below... doesn't look good.

is there a limit on sharks, I have a friend going shark fishing this weekend south TX and there is a limit of one shark per person in the boat..

I believe from what I've heard we are catching and releasing the sharks, but the regular fish (trout, drums, perch, etc...) is the stuff that we can eat and use for bait. We will be in such a remote location that we don't really have to worry about "limits." But being good fisherman that we are, we won't over-do anything.

Some of ya'll seemed a little confused about the kayak thing, so this is just to clear that up :p. The kayaks will take the line out a mile or so, and then return to the beach. Sort of like doing a 1 mile cast, just with the kayaks. Leave the lines out all day and night until something hits. Occasionally the kayaks will go back out to see if everything is okay with the lines, and then re-bait them and come back to shore.

When something big actually bites, that's when the truck and shark seat come in.

It's supposed to be some big tournament, so it would be cool to see some of you guys there. My friends told me that where we go there is absolutely nothing. No fresh water, electricity, phone signal is so weak you have to drive to get to it, no evidence that people have ever been there before. That's how remote it is. Kind of like being an early explorer but with "sharks" on the prowl.

I know for certain that I'm taking the biggest first aid kit I can get a hold of. I have one of those giant zipper ones that is for a car, but it has emergency flares, blankets, the whole nine yards....., so that's one of the 2 kits that I'll have with me. I'm going to carry my Camelbak Mule with me while I'm there for the water source and as something to hold my little first aid kit and extra spoons (fishing spoons that is).

Anybody know any simple fish recipes that don't require perishable food supplies? I'm going to wally world here in an hour or so to get my snacks and case of water, so any last minute pointers would be helpful.

Don't forget the camera.

Oh question. If its a tournament and its catch and release how will the winner be determined. Is there an official that will bve camping with you?

Good question. I believe that they have to take a picture, measure it out and.........*phone call*

It is catch and release. My friend just told me that at registration we get a special one time use ruler (for that particular tournament) and a plaque of some sort that has to be in the picutre taken by a digital camera with the time and date on it.

Cool, gotcha:thumbup:

Are there gonna be people fishing from boats, or is it a shore fishing only thing.? Sorry for all the questions, I know your on your way out; so feel free not to answer:o
