Sharp Spydie Hole

Once a year seems fairly infrequent to me as far as forums repeating....

I did a search for this and couldn't see any mention, I'm sure it's been discussed. The hole on my Tenacious is very sharp and I sometimes do damage to my thumb when opening. Does anyone else have this problem. do people ever do a little modding of the hole?

Sounds to me like a callus or two for you is in order. ;)

Here we go again... We've have this thread at least twice in the last couple of years. Deal with it, get tougher thumbs, or do a mod on the hole.

I guess I've been lucky, I've never had a Sypdie hole too sharp.

Sorry, I apologized in the original post. A search didn't net anything. thanks for making me feel like a complete tool, I appreciate it!

For sure!

Nothing to concern yourself about, this entire forum is devoted to tools. ;) Some sharper than others.

No need to apologize !
Just overlook comments like that.

If topics only came up once around here this whole site would be dead and out of business.
We have new members every day, and thats what keeps this place open.
The newer members have never seen threads(such as this), and its much more fun to read the forums when new instead of signing up only to spend half of your time searching old threads.

The main thing is you got your answer and can now make it to your liking:thumbup:
Good luck !

I guess I've been lucky, I've never had a Sypdie hole too sharp.

After having worked in mouldmaking, as well as doing other metal and woodworking stuff, I think my thumbs are tough enough.
Even so, I have had a few where the Spyderhole cut right through a callus.

When opening the knife makes me bleed, that's too sharp: fact.

Of course, having a ready supply of various grits of silicon carbide paper makes the solution easy as all hell.

It doesn't need a chamfer, just breaking the edge.

Considering that my Yojimbo 2 had a nice, smooth, not cutting me type of hole, I say "Bollocks!" to the idea that having a hole which slices skin is a desirable feature.

The only part of the blade which should do any cutting is the edge.

The sharpest Spydie hole I've ever received was by far my Szabo. I've got more than quite a few Spydies, but the Szabo's opening hole was pretty sharp...I'll probably try and change that one day because I love that knife, it just isn't perfect yet!

Now - are you just being nice or being a tool  - Funny but true :).

I like a crisp factory edge myself - leaves me with options.

I don't mind when topics get recycled. We can't all be in the know even with the search option.

Get something with a thumb stud, or better yet a nail nick, LOL, all the above will work. Smooth to your liking.

Or you could just middle finger flick your spydies like I do. I mean jeez, I sometimes feel like the only one...

I love the holes sharp. The older chamfered ones were easy to have your thumb slip off. I say, get more manly thumbs. :)

30 seconds with a Sharpmaker rod or similar tool and you should be good to go.

I tried that at first on the one I had that would take skin off, and I scratched it up around the hole on one side.
I swapped to a rat tail file(like I should've started with) and didn't get any scratces on the other side.

You could do it with a Spyderco rod, but you would need to much more careful than I was. I tend to get in a hurry.

I've had at least 60 Spyderco's and have only had the one early Sage 2 that had a hole that was to sharp. For all of you that keep saying stuff like ..."you need to get tougher thumbs" have never seen one like the one I had or you would understand. When it will cut the skin off of your thumb its way to sharp. Not a problem since it was a very easy fix, and like with any production knife they can't all be perfect. Don't assume it never happens just because it hasn't happened to you.
