Just a brief plug after reading about these in another thread - I was getting a lot of grief from trying to sharpen an m4 blade that I had previously convexed on a belt grinder out of sheer frustration with all my other stones (don't ask what they are, paperwork long gone) and I was able to get a consistent shaving edge on it in unde 10 minutes, maybe 5. Whew!
 
Good to know! I just got one a couple weeks ago, but it's still in the box. I have the 325/1200 Sharpal that I like, but I wanted to try the 600 edge to see how that was after deburring!
 
Finally broke out the 220/600. Sharpened a couple of my leather working blades (skivers) and a Magnamax knife, worked very well! The MagnaMax is a 3" drop point and had no edge bevel and was around .010" at the edge. I think I got it done in like 5-7 minutes, including stropping and testing it out! Then I went thru a TON of amazon boxes to recycle them...about 2 months worth and it still had a nice edge!
 
I think so possibly! I have a S90V user and from the cutting I did with the MagnaMax blade, it seems to hold the edge as well or better than S90V. I will have to resharpen the S90V more to get it to the same level (hasn't been sharpened in a while) and see if I can do some more testing...gotta find more cardboard, good thing it's Prime Days! It will get passed around my fish and game club during hunting season for people to try out, too, or I will make another one for them to try.

The MagnaMax isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be to grind. I thought I was using a 40 grit belt, but it was actually a 60 grit belt originally for the main grinding and went up to a nice 400 belt satin finish, felt a little harder than Magnacut to get a nice satin, but not as bad as S90V. Sharpening was MUCH easier than I thought it was going to be! Gotta find some wood to carve at and see how it does with other tasks.

Ive always loved M4, can take a blistering sharp polished edge. It can also be time consuming because of the steel hardness but well worth the effort. One of my favorite ways to sharpen M4 is to sharpen the primary bevel a bit coarse (320 grit) then use a Spyderco UF ceramic to add a microbevel. Finish that off with some 1 micron diamond on a strop and you get an insanely sharp edge, plus it cuts way down on sharpening time.
