Pretty sure that I have solved my problems as far as which knife to get and what kind of steel – I have fallen in love with the Sage! I don't have a "Gentleman's" knife either so it would fill a spot I feel is missing something

I'm not a gentleman (not even sure what that means), but I am really liking the look of the new Chapparall with Raffir Noble scales and CTS-XHP steel.

The sage series are great knives. I've had the 2 and still have the 3 and really like them. I do hesitate to really beat up the knives, even though they are supposed to be pretty good for a hard user, because they're almost too pretty. The sage is the biggest reason I sold my native 5 LW s110V with blue scales but I should have just kept both. Sometimes i just really like a lockback.

Just like the previous poster, the chap is high on the list of modern gentleman folders.

I recently got a native 5LW and it's definety my favorite knife, it fits so perfectly in my hand and the blade shape is perfect. I just regret not getting the g10 version, I really want to get aftermarket purple/black scales. All this talk of the sage is making me want to check it out. Do they make a g10 version of the sage?

It is indeed G 10. I am actually looking at the Sage five, from what I can tell it has a smaller footprint than some of the others. I actually ordered one last night but it hasn't shipped yet. Quick look at the Chap looks very nice, and $20 less. If it isn't too small I may order that instead.

The Chap looks pretty much identical to me, just a little too small for my hand, otherwise I think I'd go with that.

Valid point, and one of the things I like so much about Spyderco. They seem to offer lines which differ only in key ergonomic points so that you can find what works for your your hand, which I think is pretty functionally important.

I know what you mean about them being too pretty, it isn't going to be a hard use knife, for that I will use the Endura or Recon 1.

The chap is smaller, with a thinner blade, and a back lock (only sage 4 has back lock). It should fit more squarely into a gent's folder whereas the sage is very much into the EDC/all-purpose knife IMO. Sage has a 3" blade and chap has around a 2.75" blade.

I wouldn't underestimate the finger choils. Spyderco does it better than anybody, making a little knife blade fit bigger hands combined with ergonomics. Their downside is they have some ugly looking knives but some of the most functional.

I think a chap with a sage would be a great EDC combo or just a nice looking matching pair. Chap for really nice dress or when you want a thin blade, sage for anything under battoning.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I could easily justify owning both of them (to myself, my wife maybe not as easily).
